WAS VOR UNSEREN AUGEN PASSIERT:

WHAT IS HAPPENING BEFORE OUR EYES:
Thousands of people from Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan have increasingly fled to Belarus since the summer. The Belarusian government lured them with false promises and entry into the EU.
Once in Belarus and fleeing cruel wars and humanitarian crises in their home countries, they were forcibly pushed across the borders into the EU. But the declared state of emergency in Poland and Lithuania makes it legal to refugees are violently pushed back from the border.
These people, hoping for a better life, have been trapped in the woods for months between military troops who are tossing them back and forth across borders in the most inhumane manner possible.
Temperatures now reach -10 degrees C in winter, it is wet and cold. These displaced people have no access to food, water, sanitation in the forest. There are regular reports of people dying from violence, hunger and hypothermia. Among them are families, pregnant women and babies. The EU looks the other way and leaves these people to fend for themselves...
WHAT WE CAN DO:
We at Project 009 want to facilitate humanitarian aid and reporting in this situation. We are in contact with activists and grassroots groups from Lithuania and Poland that are providing these people with basic necessities and taking care of all injured. We want to collect (in-kind) donations from Berlin for these groups and deliver them personally to both countries and assist the volunteers there.
The pictures used here were taken by a young man from northern Iraq, who himself was trapped in this forest for 28 days before he fled to Germany. He took these pictures during his time there and sent them to us to report about the grievances so that they will not be forgotten. On our way to Poland we want to go meet him, so that he can tell us about his experiences and we can publish his story. In Poland and Lithuania, we will also report without filter and document what is done to the people there, so that these human rights violations will not be left unseen. Responsibility must be taken, which is why we want to show solidarity through Project 009!
