I am organizing this fundraiser to help the "Purdy" family with the loss of our beloved friend, Al Purdy and to support Al’s wife Wendy, as she navigates down this difficult road.
For those of you who knew Al, you know that he was a generous soul, who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He always liked reminiscing about the good ole days, in Nova Scotia, Toronto and Sioux Lookout, and along the way Al and Wendy met many lifelong friends and “enjoyed life to its fullest”. The stories this man could tell, would keep you on your toes and let’s be honest, a little jealous of the colorful life he and Wendy have led, during their years together.
Unfortunately, Al suffered a major heart attack last Saturday, November 9th, 2024. He fought hard to stay here for Wendy, Chad and T.J., but unfortunately, on November 15th, at the age of 68, he passed peacefully with his wife of 47 years and sons Chad and T.J. by his side. Keith and I were fortunate enough to be able to visit with Al and the family Friday evening, and to reminisce about the many adventures that Al and Wendy have had along the way. One of Al’s favourite bands was Pink Floyd, who sang “The Great Gig in the Sky” and as the lyrics to the song state, “You’ve got to go sometime” we know Al is up there making new stories and reminiscing with everyone along the way.
In addition, Wendy has been dealing with her own health issues and has been off work for the past seven months. During this time period, when not looking after the apartments he managed; Al has been by her side, attending medical appointments, making sure she eats, rests and remains comfortable. Just recently, Wendy’s doctor put her on long-term disability, after having worked for 13 years at the Sobeys grocery store in Bedford.
Al’s wish was for his body to be cremated, and Wendy, Chad and T.J. will honor those wishes. A “Celebration of Life” for Al, will take place in the Summer of 2025 and notices will be sent out prior to the event. The family is hopeful that people will take the time to stop by and spend some time reminiscing with family and friends during the Celebration.
Due to the current situation, Wendy needs a little help to get her through the next couple of months and I know that friends/family near and far will want to assist Wendy and family in any way they can. Every contribution of yours will help the family during this difficult time.
Thank you and wish only the best to everyone's families.
