Shrieking Eels English Channel Relay Support
At long last, the Shrieking Eels are approaching their swim. Originally scheduled for a 2020 July English Channel relay, this group of six swimmers completed rigorous training outdoors in Spring 2020, while gyms and pools were locked down. They met qualifying requirements for their event, knowing that with the spreading pandemic, they would not get their opportunity.
The swim was rescheduled to July, 2021. With the new travel restrictions, our swimmers face a quarantine (without swimming) upon arrival, and many additional expenses from extending this event into a second year. While swimmers entered this commitment with an understanding of the training and financial commitment it would take to make such an endeavor happen, the year delay and added adaptations to travel certainly add a lot more expense to the team. Any support is welcome from friends, families, and fellow swimmers.
Supporters will be given snazzy silicone caps in open water and other colors, latex caps, or shirts, based on availability and donation level. Pre-relay gear will be distributed at Otters and masters practices at St Louis Park and Richfield.
Our swim will take place sometime between July 11 and July 16, and we have to leave home early to enjoy our quarantine together in the UK. We're the number one spot on our boat on that tide, and are finishing last-minute preparations, and figuring out our COVID protocols to adapt to the frequently-changing rules for international travel to the UK and EU.
Relay members:
Ross Freiderich, Luke Johnson, Aidan Choate,
Abbe Colgan, Erik Reed, Daniel Cameron
Coach: Dave Cameron
Update: with the extended restrictions, we are also aiming for the costs of our test to release at 5 days, a covid test with fast results that is not covered by any government entity. Otherwise, our quarantine must be ten days, right through our window!
