I developed a condition called lymphedema when I was sixteen. Over the years my legs, especially my left one, have swollen to be very large and painful. I have been hospitalized multiple times for things ranging from painful tissue infections to pulmonary emboli. I have a chance to have surgery on my legs that will return them to a normal size and relieve me of pain and all of the complications that go with lymphedema. I'm a teacher and I love what I do. I want to be able to continue teaching for a long time. The only doctor performing this surgery is in L.A. I will have to fly there several times and, after a short hospital stay, will be in a hotel for several weeks. Insurance will likely cover only a small portion of the surgery, if anything. It will not cover travel or living costs at all.
