Help Us Support Earthquake Relief in Myanmar

Hi, I’m MacKenzie King, the Regional Partnerships Lead for Impact Hub Network in Asia Pacific. I’m based in Bangkok, but today I’m writing to ask for your support for our friends and colleagues in Myanmar who are facing an urgent crisis.

On Friday, a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Sagaing, Myanmar. It’s one of the strongest quakes the region has experienced in recent memory—leaving behind widespread damage and heartbreaking loss. Some of the hardest-hit areas are also the most remote, receiving little to no aid.

Impact Hub Yangon, a local social innovation hub that’s been active since 2017, is now stepping up to coordinate emergency relief. Their team—an incredible group of around a dozen dedicated people—has stayed in Myanmar through years of uncertainty and hardship. Now, they’re rallying once again to help their communities survive and rebuild.

UPDATE

More than 3,000 lives have been lost, with thousands injured and still missing. Homes and livelihoods have been destroyed. Critical infrastructure has crumbled. Entire communities are struggling to survive as the death toll continues to rise.

The need for help is urgent—and far from over.

We are calling for more support to continue providing both immediate relief and long-term recovery for those who have lost everything.

At Impact Hub Yangon, we are responding on two critical fronts:

Emergency Relief – We are assessing the needs on the ground to ensure the most urgent requirements of the affected people are met. This includes communicating with a team member in Sagaing and requesting an assessment report from a volunteer group conducting a week-long evaluation across the affected areas. Based on these findings, we will continue supplying critical items such as food, medicine, personal hygiene supplies, tents, shelters, etc to the areas in greatest need. Additionally, we are identifying key community locations in the most affected areas where we can potentially set up solar-powered water pumps and common charging stations for the local communities. We are adapting our response plan based on the situation on the ground to ensure funds are spent in the most impactful way.

Once the most pressing needs are met, we will continue with business recovery and rebuild efforts.

Business Recovery –We will assess the evolving needs of MSMEs in the affected areas to prepare for long-term support, including recovery consultation, psychosocial support through our partners, and access to financing for affected entrepreneurs. We are currently in discussions with organizations that could potentially collaborate with us to support business recovery efforts.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE

On March 28, 2025, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar, causing widespread devastation. The quake has resulted in a rising death toll of 1,700, 3,400 injuries and 300 missing. The hardest-hit regions include Sagaing Division and Mandalay Division, where entire communities have been left in ruins. Critical infrastructure, including bridges, highways, and airports, has sustained significant damage, making rescue and relief efforts extremely challenging.

We at Impact Hub Yangon are deeply disheartened by this tragedy and are doing all we can to support the affected communities. The devastation has left thousands without homes and disrupted livelihoods, and we are committed to mobilizing both immediate and long-term assistance.

Here is how we will spend the donated funds:

1. Emergency Response

Impact Hub Yangon is actively working with local businesses in the quake-affected area to purchase food and essential supplies for emergency relief in the Sagaing region, providing immediate support to both the victims and the local economy.
