Peace!
I'ma get straight to it:
THE ASK
I'm seeking $2160 to purchase year-long supplies for 180 upcoming juniors and seniors at Fremont High School in East Oakland, California. The cost of each customized supply bag, which will be referred to as "THE GEAR", is $12/student.
THE GEAR
Each student will receive the following during the very first week of school:
- Canvas bag for easy access from locker-to-class (designed with motivating hip hop lyrics)
- Weekly organizer/schedule
- 3-ring binder
- Dividers
- Ream of college-ruled binder paper (500 sheets)
- Pens
- Pencils
- Highlighters
- Pencil/supply bag
- Sharpener (ohhhhh, the time wasted going up to "sharpen my pencil")
- Journal
- 8 folders, one for each class
WHO YOU ARE BENEFITING
This cause will benefit an estimated 180 students this coming year. I'm teaching 6 classes, with roughly 30 kids in each class (sometimes more!). I will have at least a couple classes of students who I taught last year, which I'm very much looking forward to. I'm interested to see if and how having access to certain tools (namely, school supplies) can have a positive impact on not only their academic success, but also their motivation and outlook as scholars.
BACKGROUND & CONTEXT
My name is Maya Shweiky. I'm going into my second year teaching in Oakland. Fremont is a Title 1 school, naturally underresourced. Last year, I observed the vast majority of students come unprepared to class, which significantly affected their motivation, drive, progress and ultimate success in school. Too many times students walk into class without any materials--not even a bag, pen, pencil, nothin'! In an effort to keep classroom time for active learning, the goal is to preemptively offer all students in class the necessary tools and systems needed to stay organized and focus on the task and information at hand.
SUCCESS is dependent on MOTIVATION, which is rooted in a sense of WORTH. Let's give these kids the gear they deserve!
I welcome any and all forms of support. If you aren't willing or able to support financially, but would like to donate any of the aforementiond school supplies, please contact me at: [email redacted].
Endless gratitude,
SHWEIKY
