Sian’s statement - “Celebrating Diversity & Unity in Liverpool The Liverpool City Region has a rich cultural heritage and vibrant diversity. I am deeply inspired by the way our community embraces and celebrates the differences that make each of us unique. With a Kenyan-born husband and a mixed-heritage son, I have witnessed first-hand how our differences can unite us and make us stronger. In my final graduation piece, I wanted to create something that goes beyond floral artistry; to reflect my inner most thoughts. I considered exploring historic slavery but as I delved deeper into the subject, I realised that I didn't want to single out any race, religion, or sexual orientation. Instead, I wanted to simplify the message of inclusion. The three of us – my husband, my son, and I – are completely different, yet together we are a family. Every human is different but, in many ways, we are all the same. We have blood running through our veins and a heartbeat. Regardless of race, religion, wealth, place of birth, sexual orientation etc, our differences unite and empower us - we are perfectly different. This realisation led me to the core idea behind my artwork. I aim to show that you don't have to conform and follow the pack, you can break the mould and show the world a different way. You can choose to plant your roots differently, and still flourish, looking as beautiful as ever. This metaphor represents the incredible diversity within Liverpool, where historically, people from all over the world have started a new life, bringing with them their cultures, family recipes, traditions, and heritage. I am so glad this continues today. It is because of courageous individuals we get to enjoy and share new experiences, making Liverpool an incredibly diverse and engaging region that is truly worth celebrating.”
