Sierra Leone native needs his own KeKe

We traveled more than 4,500 miles from the comforts of our homes to Freetown, Sierra Leone, to unite with our Brothers and Sisters. Many of us had never been to Africa, and it was our first experience meeting face-to-face with the Sierra Leone People. I can say, with certainty, it was an experience I will not ever forget.

I was surprised at the condition of the residents of Freetown, and touched at the very core by the Sierra Leone people. One of those such individuals was Melbourne, a trusted KeKe (tricycle taxi) driver who assisted my Dad and me through our entire stay in Freetown. Melbourne took us on tours through areas of the city we might not have seen otherwise, and educated us about the region’s history. He provided emergency services for Dad when needed. Essentially, he was on-call for us. In a place unfamiliar, it's easy to feel anxiety and stress having to navigate the terrain. Melbourne puts our minds at ease with skillful driving, professionalism, genuine concern for our well-being, and respect.

Melbourne is a man of God who provides for his wife and three children, as well as a businessman. He allowed me to meet his family and visit his cafe, located between the Radisson Blu, my Dad’s hotel, and Hotel Barmoi, where I stayed during the visit.

During our journey, we discovered the KeKe driven by Melbourne was not owned by him. In fact, he works for a company to which he pays 170,000 Leone daily before earning a profit. For Melbourne, owning his own vehicle will allow him to work independently and increase his daily wages that support his children’s school tuition and his wife’s cafe. We understand the benefits of ownership and self-reliance. Our hope is, eventually, Melbourne can start his own KeKe company with drivers working under his leadership.

There are so many in Freetown that could use a helping hand. We want to start with one man who treated complete strangers with care and kindness. We ask you to join us in supporting a man’s dream with whatever you can part with. Our minimum goal is $2,600.00 USD for a new KeKe.

Your consideration and participation are much appreciated. Sometimes, it takes a village, so we encourage you to share the link within your circles.
