Our son Shawn was diagnosed with Keratoconus - an eye condition where his Corneas are gradually detaching, and he requires a surgery to stop the progression of this eye disease, which leads to legal blindness. We are not sure how this happened as he always had excellent vision up until his grade 11th year. We his parents believe it may have been during his Major Bantam or Major Midget year of hockey, and the specialist agrees, that this was probably the cause of a concussion. He had to have a major knock to the head.
We were told by the specialist that they have fought with many insurers including FNHIB and they will not cover the cost for the procedure until the patient reaches a certain level in eye sight which is usually 3 to 4 ft in front of him. This eye disease requires him to get a new eye glasses prescription every 5 to 6 months. I also, contacted Jordans Principle (JP)and explained his situation. Diagnosed as a child, the long wait till FNHIB approves, the long wait for a hospital operating room to be available and the costs involved.. They denied his claim because when we applied his was overage by one month, and I had explained that we did not know about JP.
The specialist told me where his so young we should try to get the money to cover the costs ourselves, so hear it goes..We are asking as parents for help with the costs. The surgery itself is $4000 plus he will need anti-inflammatories and other meds. He will have to be close by to see the specialist every other day, anywhere from 7 to 14 days depending on his healing. The funds are need for the surgery, travel, hotel, and food.
We are asking family and friends and the hockey family and friends we have made over the years to please help by donating or sharing. He really wants this surgery to be done this winter, as soon as we reach this goal we can book it...thanks to all
