SILENT CRASH - Help Us Tell The Stories

People are dying because Michigan state lawmakers and Michigan's governor enacted PA 21. It went into effect on July 2, 2021.

 

PA 21 gutted no-fault auto insurance - the program that Michigan drivers have paid into since 1973. If a Michigan driver was in a catastrophic car accident and needed ongoing medical care past what the initial insurance covered, that fund paid for it.

 

For life.

 

It's a promise Michigan made to its paying citizens.

 

This isn't tax money. It's money the drivers paid into the fund through their insurance companies.

 

With PA21, though, Michigan survivors of catastrophic auto crashes suddenly got their benefits cut by a whopping 45%.

 

That’s 45% less in services they need to survive.

 

It also limited the hours that these survivors can get healthcare from unlimited to 56 hours per week. Many need round-the -clock care by multiple people, not one person for eight hours per day.

 

So far, 41 health provider businesses in Michigan have had to close their doors. They can't provide care at these new rates.

 

More are closing every week.

 

Survivors are being dropped off in Michigan emergency rooms and nursing homes by family members who are desperate to keep them alive and well.

 

Two have already died.

 

Senator Mike Shirkey says he wants to "wait and see what happens" before doing anything to reverse breaking the promise of care that Michigan drivers paid for since 1973.

 

The fund has $23 billion in it. There's plenty of money. This care didn't need to be cut.

 

But cut it they did.

 

And now people are suffering.

 

Some are dying.

 

It has to be fixed now.

 

And the lawmakers aren't listening to us.

 

So we're getting louder.

We're working with 1C Productions to record and publish our stories as a podcast show. 1C isn't charging its normal rates - they're appalled by the situation we're facing, too. But there are hard costs to capturing our stories and getting them out to the world.  Our original thought was we would only need 10 episodes and hopefully, this would be fixed.  However, that is not the case and we have surpassed 10 episodes, and have been releasing weekly.  Sadly, more patients are dying and being forced out of their homes and into hospitals and nursing homes where they don't belong to maintain care, so we are ramping up production to several episodes per week which increases our financial burden.  Our costs involve research, interviewing, writing, editing, recording, producing, distributing, advertising, and social media presence.  All of which is extremely time-consuming and imperative for accuracy.
