Help Kayle and Heidi bring clean drinking water to their community by supporting the Siler City Clean Water Project.
Our goal of $16,500 will provide clean drinking water to 100 families in Siler City. Each family will receive:
- an EWG recommended, NSF approved water filter pitcher
- 1-year of replacement filters
- reusable glass water bottles (for clean water on the go)
Siler City is a diverse community. Over 50% of our residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, a little over 20% White, slightly less than 20% Black, and about 10% identify as two or more races. Around 30% of Siler City’s residents are under the age of 18, with about 5% under the age of 5. A little less than 15% are aged 65 or older.
Siler City’s median household income is just over $40,000. This is about ½ the median income in Chatham County and about ⅔ the median income in North Carolina. Close to 30% of Siler City’s 2600 households are living in poverty.
Siler City’s current wastewater treatment plant is unable to keep up with the town's demand and continues to violate the Clean Water Act with fines totaling over $267,000 since 2016. The latest $28,000 was assessed by the NC Department of Environmental Quality for exceeding legal nitrite and ammonia levels by over 200%.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a non-profit group that specializes in research and advocacy in drinking water pollutants. EWG identified 18 contaminants in Siler City’s most recent water quality test. Twelve of these contaminants, 5 of which are forever chemicals, exceed health guidelines.
Experts suggest filtering drinking water to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals. For many families, this is an additional expense that is simply not in the budget. Water is essential to our survival, and everyone deserves clean drinking water.
Through the Siler City Clean Water Project, $165 just $0.45/day, will provide clean drinking water to a family of 4 for a year.
Thank you for supporting the Siler City Clean Water Project and bringing clean water to our residents.
