Simon Baccanello Memorial Fund

'If you want to know how much I love you, try to count the waves'

In memory of Simon Baccanello, who was tragically taken from us on 13 May 2023. This fund has been created to commission a structure (a semi-circular seat and firepit) overlooking the ocean, at Walkers Rock, Elliston, South Australia.

We envisage that the structure will be a gathering place for the Elliston Community, family, friends, surfers, and young people. It will be a place to come together and appreciate the natural beauty of the area, and to sit, reflect, share stories, and connect with one another.

It is no secret that Simon enjoyed the simple things in life and was a nature lover. His joy came from the sound of the waves, watching the sunrise and sunset, fishing, camping, barbequing, surfing, wake boarding, bushwalking, and time spent by the fire. This structure (and the surrounding area) will represent his love for nature through the four elements: Fire, Air, Earth and Water – the building blocks of the physical and spiritual world.

We ask for your support in the construction of this project, which will cost approximately $20,000 (including labour and materials). Please note that the image provided above is an example only, the structure will be made from gravel concrete, the colour will be in keeping with the local area and it will seat at least 12 people. Construction will begin at the end of September 2024.

Any additional funds raised will be donated to Elliston Area School (where Simon taught Maths, Science and PE), a school he came to love.

You may not be able to contribute to this project financially at this time, however, we invite you to see this wonderful part of the world and to visit the memorial in your travels.
