With the help of my dear friend Jamie Sherman for submitting my press release, and the NY Fringe, a New York Times shoutout!
Every day we hear news about someone else stepping down from their powerful position, or that someone was abused by so and so; this is not a witch hunt, it is a huge shift that has been a long time coming. No longer do people have to be ashamed or put up with harassment or assault.
But there is a lot of misinformation being dispelled, and a whole lot of misunderstanding.
What is consent? What is assault? What is abuse versus unwanted flirting ?
So...
SIMPLE MATH
is a show I developed while at Ohio University to bring awareness to uncommon information about assault and abuse. I delve into what happens to the brain and how it affects behavior by embodying neurochemicals as characters and breaking down 'mathematical equations' on a chalk board. SIMPLE MATH was accepted to the New York Fringe Festival this October, and I am thrilled for the opportunity to access a wider audience, gain publicity, and continue spreading awareness.
This financial support will help me pay for my director (Ben Stockman), movement/choreographer/dramaturg (Maridee Slater) scenic designer, lighting programmer, musicians, set building, rehearsal space, the fee of the fringe festival, and publicity materials, including a press agent.
I am honored to accept the challenge of pursuing grant funding with very short notice. I am hopeful that my story is universal, relevant and vital in this current climate. While grants are challenging and by no means a guarantee, I am so grateful for my fiscal sponsor, Stuart's Opera House (Emily Prince, Education Director).
I would be so grateful for any support. I have seen first-hand the impact theater/story/narrative has on social change, thanks to my time touring with Equalogy Inc. I hope to continue carrying this torch.
