Single Launch: Recording + Promotion
Donation protected
I am raising funds to record, promote and distribute my first Single.
I have been writing songs and singing since I was 3 years old, that's when I recorded my first album (unreleased, obviously!). My songwriting has continued all throughout my life and I have over 200+ songs waiting to be heard. The YouTube video attached to this campaign has snippets of some very rough demos and phone recordings so that you can get a feel for my sound.
I write, sing and compose all my own songs. I either play guitar, piano or use a music program to create the backdrop to the song. I will be creating a very rough demo of all the parts for the single (drums, bass, etc) and taking it into the studio with me.
What is crowdfunding + why am I doing it?
I think crowdfunding is sometimes seen as begging or charity but the definition of crowdfunding is: the practice of funding a project or venture by raising money from a large number of people who each contribute a relatively small amount, typically via the Internet.
Crowdfunding is simply an alternative method of releasing music. I have consciously decided not to sign with a label as this usually means giving up creative control and the label owning your songs/royalties/copyright. I have had interest from labels in the past but it has never felt right. Crowdfunding returns the power to the artist as they have 100% creative control and will keep all revenue from the project.
The people contributing to the crowdfund are people who would have bought the music anyway so it’s basically like paying in advance.
My music has mainly never been heard (except by very close family and friends). I was always waiting for the right opportunity, or for somebody to scout me from one of my performances. The music industry is constantly changing and these days record labels want you to have professional recordings, a fanbase and more before they even consider signing you.
This New music industry is preventing some of the best new artists from being heard. Many young people simply don't have the cash to invest in their careers and get things off the ground - myself included, and even if they did they would be struggling to make ends meet. After suffering for years in an abusive home and writing many songs, I simply don't have the ability to work and fund my own career. I developed PTSD from the years of abuse and have been signed off work by my doctor until I can be treated. I have been on an NHS waiting list for 3 years and it doesn't look like I'll be seen anytime soon.
All of my songs are deeply personal, raw and vulnerable and I deeply believe they will speak to so many people who have experienced similar things to me. I believe crowd funding is the way forward for music. It takes the power away from the big, mega corporations and puts it back into the hands of the people and the artists; where it belongs.
With these funds I plan to record, promote and distribute my first ever single (I have kept it out of the YouTube video so that it will be a surprise once released). I have chosen a studio and planned out a distribution and promotion plan as well as ideas for a music video. My goal is to get some radio play and a decent amount of publicity- here is a breakdown of costs below:
Studio time + mixing and mastering: £250
Distribution (getting the song on iTunes, Spotify etc): £10
Promotion..
Music video: £200
Social media advertising: £150
Posters/flyers: £22
PRS & MCPS (royalty collection agencies): £200
Promotional pictures/single cover: £120
Go fund me charge: £27
I believe that every one of us has a divine responsibility to create art. I often think about how different my life would be if my favourite artists hadn't shared their art with the world. While we tend to think about releasing our own art as something personal and quite exposing, in reality art has far reaching effects that greatly surpass the individual who created it. The more music, poetry, paintings and any other art form you can think of that people create then the more beautiful our world will become. Crowdfunding gives us all a unique and wonderful opportunity to be an integral part of each others creative process and help birth amazing art into the universe.
My gift in this life is my singing, my songwriting and my voice and I would love the opportunity to share them as far and wide as possible. Any amount will be greatly appreciated and everyone who contributes will get a free download of the single once it's released (just make sure you leave your email address!).
Some of the costs involved in this process will be one offs and will allow me to continue creating and releasing music well into the future. My plan is to release more singles throughout the year and compile them into an EP, and eventually release my first album.
I contributed to a creative crowdfunder for the first time this year and realised what a powerful and wonderful thing it was to truly be able to make someones creative dreams a reality.
Thanks for reading :)
