WHAT IS THE SIX DEGREES OF FREEDOM PROJECT?
In the tradition established by the highly successful motion picture “Hidden Figures”, this is a project to bring to light the life and achievements of another African American female pioneer. Mrs. Yvonne Young Clark, P.E. in both book and motion picture form.
WHY IS THIS PROJECT IMPORTANT?
Y.Y. Clark, as she is known professionally, is a woman who was truly on the leading edge of the struggle encountered by women who had decided to work as a peer and professional in the areas of science and engineering. Furthermore, as an African American in the time of racial segregation in the United States, she also had to face and overcome the struggles of prejudice and bigotry that were dominant at the time. Understanding the challenges that she would face by entering a field that was dominated by men, “Y.Y.” did so not with the intent to break down barriers or to be a trailblazer. She simply wanted to be the best Mechanical Engineer that she could be. It was through the fervent desire to obtain that humble and simple goal that Mrs. Clark became a “Quiet Pioneer”.
In addition to teaching Mechanical Engineering for 55 years at TSU, here are some of Y.Y.’s other achievements that will be included in the story being prepared.
Ø First woman to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Howard University an HBCU in Washington D.C.
Ø First African-American Woman hired at Frankford Arsenal Gage Lab, a U.S. Government facility in Philadelphia.
Ø First African-American Woman hired at R.C.A. – Camden, N.J.
Ø First African-American member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).
Ø The First woman engineer ever hired as an Instructor at Tennessee State University (TSU) in the Mechanical Engineering Department.
Ø Worked as an Aerospace Engineer (Flight-General) at NASA Marshall Space Center, Huntsville, Alabama investigating the Saturn V Rocket Booster engines regarding hot spots.
Ø First woman appointed as Department Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at TSU, held position from 1965 – 1970; served a second term as Department Head in 1977 for 11 years.
Ø Worked at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, TX on the moon rock samples container for transporting moon rocks to Earth.
Ø First woman to be hired as an engineer at the Ford Motor Company - Glass Plant in Nashville, TN.
Ø First African-American woman to receive a Master’s Degree in Engineering Management at Vanderbilt University.
This project, both in book and film form, wishes to celebrate and honor her life and work in a way that can be inspiring, uplifting, promising and motivating to anyone who has a goal they want to achieve regardless of what possible obstacles they may encounter, just as Mrs. Clark did.
WHAT IS OUR PROJECT’S GOAL?
In April of 2017, Mrs. Clark will be 88 years young. It is the intent of this project to produce a book that chronicles her life and achievements in addition to producing four "pitch trailers" showing highlights of her life to show to major motion picture studios who would ultimately produce the film for release and distribution. It is our goal to achieve having the motion picture produced in time to celebrate Mrs. Clark's 90th birthday. Hopefully, in time to be recognized by the 2019 Oscars.
This project is being spearheaded by Mrs. Clark's son, Milton, so there is a vested interest in being sure that the project is done correctly and in keeping with Mrs. Clark's high standards of quality.
The Six Degree Of Freedom Project will recognize every person that makes a donation by name in both the acknowledgments of the book AND in the credits of the trailers and the final motion picture when they are produced. We know that the timetable for the completion of the project is ambitious, but with your assistance, we feel that it can be met. Therefore, with your timely generous support, we can quickly get the scripts written, websites produced and manuscripts submitted.
For all those who know Mrs. Yvonne Y. Clark personally, we want you to know that we realize how important it is to YOU that Mrs. Clark's legacy continues to be uplifting and inspiring. We will keep you informed through social media channels on the progress of the project and opportunities to assist and contribute. Please reach out to your fellow colleagues, classmates, and friends to help us properly recognize this outstanding individual.
