Sky dive for St Helena Hospice 14th July 2024
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit our funding page for St Helena hospice.
Let me introduce our little (yet mighty) fund raising team. We are all colleagues at Thorpe-le-soken surgery. Emma (me) along with Gemma, Michelle and Diana have decided to raise as much money as possible for this incredible cause by completing a (frankly terrifying) skydive!
I have to be honest. To say the prospect of throwing myself out of a plane, before falling toward the Earth at approximately 120mph, hoping that the parachute deploys is the most terrifying fund raising idea ever. Which is exactly why we are doing it.
To put this into perspective, I need to share my story.
In 2017 my wonderful mum was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer.
I love my mum. She is incredible.
She has endured so much since her diagnosis, from surgery to chemotherapy to all the ups and downs of the cancer journey. Regardless of this, she has taught me so much about staying positive and has shown true grit and determination even in the toughest of times.
I have been aware of St Helena’s hospice for many years, mostly professionally, as I am a nurse. I had always hoped that if ever my mums condition worsened, that we would be able to get her a bed in the hospice. A place where specialist care is given to anyone with a life limiting condition, regardless of your diagnosis. A much more appropriate place to be instead of the over stretched local hospital. But sadly, I was informed that due to demand, there is no guarantee a bed would be available.
The heart broken feeling that the hospice is under so much strain and unable to meet the ever growing demand for beds has stayed with me.
The team at the hospice provide a safe environment with specialists knowledge in managing life limiting conditions. Just the place to be if your symptoms are not able to be managed at home. When you are weak and vulnerable, when you no longer are able to care for yourself.
St Helena’s hospice is SOLEY funded by donations. Which is why we need to support this very worthy cause.
So, after talking about my experience, Gemma thought the only way forward was to face our worst fear and do a skydive!!!
So that’s us. Four very scared NHS workers, who want to help a very worthy cause… but we need your help.
To cover our skydive on the 14th July 2024, we are hoping to raise a minimum of £500 each (total £2,000)
I know the cost of living has impacted us all, including the hospice, so I know it’s a big ask. But from the bottom of hearts, we would be so grateful for any donations.
We are in the process of arranging several fund raising events to help us achieve our target. We will share these here and on our social media pages to keep you updated.
Thanks again for reading our page. Wishing you all health and happiness in 2024.
