As many of you know, Skylar was a passenger involved in the rollover accident in Blue Springs on April 26th, 2018. She was ejected from the vehicle and has sustained some severe injuries. Concussion, road rash on entire right side of her body from head to toe, her C1 vertebrae is broken on one side, fractured T2 in her spine, 6 broken ribs, bruised lungs, a lacerated liver, punctured spleen, fractured Sacrum Colla (pelvis),fractured wrist and broken fingers which she will have surgery to repair on May 4th, severe bruises on her palms, a puncture wound from a tree branch in her upper right leg, both femurs were broken and she has had surgery to place titanium rods and screws in both legs, and lots and lots of stitches. She has had to receive 3 blood transfusions. She spent 6 days in the ICU but has now been upgraded to a regular room.
The hospital has been amazing. They have kept her comfortable. Explained everything so well and they are moving her right along in getting her better. She is working with physical and occupational therapists daily.
She is on the mend and getting better physically every day. She has been up walking with the help of nurses and an adapted walker that allows her to use her forearms for support rather than her hands and wrists. She is doing so great wanting to do as much as she can for herself. Upon release from hospital care, she will be going to inpatient rehabilitation for a minimum of 3 weeks.
She has some really high highs and some really low lows. Lots of emotions going through her that she's just not sure how to deal with. The doctor has informed us that she will probably have PTSD, and she has already stated that she NEVER wants to ride in a car again. Her mental health is a big concern at this point and will require ongoing attention.
At first Amber and James (Skylar's parents) were not wanting a go fund me started. They did not want to "profit" from her tragedy, but since looking at the bigger, long term picture, they have realized there have been and will be more expenses than they had anticipated. Clothes that are able to accommodate her injuries and devices and that she can put on and take off on her own, missed work for both parents, as well as her continued care once she does get home: ramp to get her into the house, bathing and bathroom items that she will need, the possibility of needing a nurse either full time or part time, as well as continued therapies which will require more time missed from work for her parents. And I'm sure there will be more unforeseen expenses on the horizon.
The money donated will help with household expenses that would otherwise suffer since both parents have been off work, as well as medical bills, devices and items she will need to make her self sufficient, and continued treatments for months and months down the road.
The mere fact that she survived this horrific accident and is not paralyzed from her C1 down is a miracle. God has big plans for her and has kept her here to carry out His mission.
Every little bit helps. Thank you for reading her story.
