My seven year old cousin and Godson, Skyler had been through a lot in the past year. Within a couple months time, Sky went from have 1 seizure a month to having anywhere from 1-30 seizures in a day. This was when Skyler was taken to the University of Iowa Hospital to find out what was going on.
Back in April, Skyler had the corpus callosotomy surgery where the corpus callosum was severed to stop the seizure activity from crossing from one hemisphere of the brain to the other. This surgery was done in hopes of minimizing the amount of grand mal or drop seizures he would have in a day.
He was kept in the hospital for a week after the surgery and has made great improvements since then but he has still been having more seizures than the doctors thought he would have.
In September, they took him back to the hospital to do a 5-7 EEG to see if they could do the surgery where they would completely remove the part of his brain causing the seizures. They were sent home 24 hours after starting the test because they had gotten enough information about Skyler's brain activity.
In the last month, Skyler had stopped eating and wasn't being his active normal self. The doctors said that those were the side effects of the new medicine he was put on so nothing was really thought of it. About a week after there was very little seen out of Skyler, my Aunt and Uncle took him directly to the hospital feeling as though something wasn't right.
When they got to the hospital, the doctors immediately did tests and got a feeding tube in him. Since he had refused to eat for so long, his body and organs were basically shutting down. The doctors told them that if they would have waited 24 more hours, that he might not have made it.
They have been in the hospital for 2 weeks now and while they have been there, Skyler has had a surgery for a permanent g-tube so that he is still able to get the food and nutrients he needs to survive. Hopefully, they will be released in the next couple days but it will be a learning period for everyone with what has changed in the last two weeks.
This GoFundMe account has been set up in hopes to help pay for the surgery expenses (past and future) and any other expenses that come along with Skyler's treatments. This may include food, gas (since they live an hour and a half away from Iowa City), medicine (he is currently on 6 different medications), therapy, anything else that insurance doesn't cover, etc. My family and I could really use all the help, love, and support we can get! Thank you in advance! ❤
