The youngest of 12 children born August 5, 1967 in Rimbey, Alberta, Joe (Slim Skinner) was diagnosed in 2005 with an aggressive form of MS. Although it has impacted his life dramatically, it has not dampened the unbelievable person he is and it most certainly does not define him or hold him back from living his life as full as he can.
From an very early age Slim loved to travel, hence his first solo road trip when he was 4 years old. Armed with his gum boots, a boat (piece of wood with bailer twine tied to one end) he set off to concur the raging spring runoff in the ditches out front of our family farm. He followed and played in the stream all the way into Rocky Mountain House, which was two miles from the farm. It was when he was passing the Trans Alta office that one of dad’s crew recognized him as one of the Leskosek kids, so he picked him up and drove him home, the disciplinary repercussions did not deter him, he had caught the travel bug.
Over the course of the next many years Joe’s career, a Directional Driller in the Oil & Gas industry would see him travel and work all over Canada, USA and as far as the remote jungles of Papua New Guinea.
Growing up our mother (Betty) use to always say to us kids, we are not here to judge another, step back and walk a mile in another man’s shoes, maybe then you will understand why they are the way they are. Taking this to heart, Joe is going to do just that, however because he can’t walk very well he is going to drive.
On June-4-2018, my brother Slim Skinner, Pearl (his 65 Chevy truck) and brother Otto (support driver) will depart from Victoria British Columbia, driving 7,463 Kilometre, they will follow the Trans-Canada Highway, reaching the turn around point of St Johns Newfoundland to raise awareness for MS.
As Slim travels across the country he will meet with, interview and document the stories of other Canadians living with MS. Pearl will also be doing her part to raise awareness for MS on the trip, she will be participating in local car club cruise nights from coast to coast. If you wish to share your MS story with Slim as he travels across Canada or want him to participate in your car club cruise night. please contact Slim Skinner directly at [email redacted] to schedule an interview date and time.
Upon his return to Calgary, the stories Joe has collected from across this big beautiful country will become the framework for a documentary about MS, which he hopes to one day share with the world.
This past year Slim has been a pivotal year for Joe, he has made some incredible changes in how he approaches MS, how he fuels his body, his exercise routine, his rest, all things that have seen him loose over 40 pounds and have made him stronger both mentally and physically. He will be sharing these changes with people he meets as well in his personal “Living With MS documentary”
As anyone living with MS, funds become very scares to say the least, so we are kicking off this personal Go Fund Me to help Joe with some of the travel expenses he will incur along the way.
We thank you in advance for your generous donations, support and kindness which you have extended.
If you wish to participate in anyway you can learn more at slimskinner.com which goes live on June 1st to kick off this adventure. Slim Skinner Looks Forward To Meeting You On The Road!!!!!!
