SMA life changing treatments for Rykker Knox

Our twins boys Rykker Knox & Bekkem Kreed were born on September 24th. Both were in the NICU majority of the last 3 weeks since birth. On the 9th day of birth, we received a call that no parent would ever want to receive. One of our boys, Rykker Knox had tested positive for Spinal muscular Atrophy (SMA), a very rare disease that affects and robs the motor neurons—nerve cells that control your ability to breathe, eat, walk, etc. located in the spinal cord. There are 4 levels of this disease and Rykker has the level 1 type SMA which is ultimately the worst type you can have. Majority of babies with level 1 are not expected to make it past 2 years of age.

3 types of treatments options have been introduced in 2017 for SMA, and ultimately, is very very expensive. Treatment #1 is $2.2 million, treatment #2 is 460,000 a year and treatment #3 is $350,000 a year. None of which guarantees good out comes and can have side affects. But at the same time, that isn’t something that will hold us back from trying anything we can to give our sweet boy a fighting chance and the opportunity for a good outcome with this! And the sooner we can get treatment going, the better that outcome can be.

We are going to start treatment #3 this week and hopefully start treatment #1 within two weeks. At this point our insurance declined covering any treatments…
