Small business lost in the Lahaina fire ラハイナ火災で焼失し

This is an update on Piece of Ocean Maui and Saori Arnold.(下部に日本語のコメントが続きます）

Firstly, the business insurance procedures were applied for immediately after the disaster. However, additional documentation has been requested, and the application is still under review. Consequently, no disaster compensation has been received yet.

However, recently, a private pop-up shop was held at a friend's house. Despite having a very limited inventory, Saori participated and experienced temporary sales beyond expectations, thanks to the generous support of those who came.

Furthermore, although Sheraton Maui, which previously maintained a retail space, resumed welcoming tourists from December 23, the reopening of the shop at the same location is still a challenging situation. This is due to the loss of the workshop and financial constraints, requiring extensive preparations before any reopening can take place.

The ongoing circumstances remain tough, so we sincerely ask for the continued warm support.

Piece of Ocean Mauiと、さおり岡崎アーノルドさんの近況報告です。

まず、事業保険手続きは被災後直ぐに申請済みなのですが、追加の資料提出なども求められ、依然として審査中との回答で、災害補償は一切支払われていません。

ただ先日、友人宅でプライヴェートなポップアップショップが開催され、ごく限られた在庫ながら出店し、支援の方々のご厚情で予想以上に臨時の売り上げがありました。

また、以前小売りスペースを維持していたシェラトンマウイは12月23日から観光客の受け入れを再開しましたが、工房を失った事や、財政的な制限もあり、未だ同所への再出店の為には多くの準備を施さなくてはならない状況で、実現には至っていません。

引き続き厳しい状況に置かれていますので、温かいご声援の継続を是非宜しくお願い致します。

My friend, Saori Arnold lost everything - her home, belongings, and cars - during the Lahaina Fire on August 8, 2023. The only silver lining was that her entire family, including her seven dogs, managed to escape without major injuries, although it was a close call. Saori and her family continued to move for emergency evacuation overnight, and it wasn't until early the next morning that they finally found a bit of calm in 25 miles distance from Lahaina. They purchased clothing and water at the Target in Kahului, when the store just opened the door for the day, and changed into everything in the bathroom.

Unfortunately, her self-employed jewelry studio for "Piece of Ocean Maui", the center of her livelihood, was also completely destroyed.

She had recently started renting a studio in April 2023, investing in new furniture, tools (Bracelet Mandrel, Pearl & Coral Drilling Machine, etc.), and all the materials for jewelry making (Tahitian Pearls, Freshwater Pearls, Gemstones, etc.) worth at least over $30,000. Of course, insurance doesn't cover the entire losses, and it's still uncertain whether or when any compensation will be received.

Since then, off course, she has struggled to resume jewelry production and sales. One of her cars they could use to escape off the fire, which was loaded with a minimal inventory put into during the evacuation, is the only resource left, and income has been almost nonexistent. Retail spaces she had been leasing in resort hotels are still closed after the fire since they have not been opened for visitors yet.

Support from organizations such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Red Cross continues, but at this point, access to the disaster-stricken area of her studio has not even been completely permitted yet (the photograph is of the remains of her burnt-down residential parcel, permitted to enter recently). There is no clear prospect for securing permanent housing or other stable living arrangements. Even the condominium units provided as a shelter may force sudden relocation, leading to further uncertainty and anxiety for her family.

Despite these challenges, she has been utilizing the limited tools and materials to turn the shelter unit into both a living space and a studio. Slowly but surely, she is rebuilding her business for the future. Her hope is to open a dedicated studio and retail spaces soon, and work towards stabilizing her family's life.

As a friend, I have initiated this fund with the aim of gradually repurchasing the lost tools and materials, supporting her in restarting of her dream as soon as possible. I sincerely hope that many of you can join in providing warm encouragement and assistance. Your generous support is greatly appreciated.

僕の友人、アーノルド岡崎さおりさんは2023年8月8日のラハイナ大災で所有していた家も家財道具も車も全て失いました。唯一せめての幸いだったと言えるのは、ペットの犬達を含めた家族全員が大きな怪我もなく命辛々脱出できた事です。さおりさんと家族は、緊急避難のために終夜移動し続け、ついに翌朝早くなってからやっと、ラハイナから25マイル離れた場所で少しだけ落ち着ける場所を見つけることができました。その日の営業のドアが開いたばかりのカフルイの大型ストア“Target”で、衣類と水を購入し、そしてお店のバスルームで煤にまみれた全てを着替えました。

彼女は自営業「Piece of Ocean Maui」の拠点だったジュエリー工房さえも完全消失しました。

希望に満ちて今年の4月から借り始めたばかりのスタジオの為に購入した机、椅子、棚、作業用テーブル、全ての高価な工具類（Bracelet Mandrel、Pearl & Coral Drilling Machine、etc.)、そしてジュエリーやアクセサリーの全ての素材（Tahitian Pearls、Fresh Water Pearls、Gemstones、etc.）。それらは少なくとも総額$30000以上の損失でした。当然保険だけでは全て補償されませんし、支払われるか否か、そしてそれがいつ決済されるかさえも未だ定かではありません。

その後は勿論、ジュエリー制作も販売も殆んど行えず、火災時の逃避に使用した車にたまたま積み込めた極僅かな在庫が残っていただけで、収入も殆んど皆無な状態が続いています。リゾートホテル内に借りていた小売スペースは、火災後まだ観光客に開放されていないため、閉鎖されたままです。

連邦緊急事態管理庁（FEMA）や赤十字（RED CROSS）を始めとする組織の支援は続けられていますが、現時点では、被災した工房のあった土地への入域さえ許可されていない状態で（写真は既に入域が許可された、消失した住居跡の区画です）、恒久的な住居確保やその他の安定した生活設定の目途は全く立っていません。避難所として提供されているコンドミニアムのユニットもいつ突然の転出を迫られるかも知れず、そうなればまた家族で引っ越しを繰り返さえざるを得ない、精神的にも非常に不安な日々を過ごしています。

そんな状況下でありながら、限られた工具と素材を使って、避難所であるユニットを生活の場兼工房として利用し、徐々にではありますが将来に向けてのビジネスの建て直しをスタートさせました。いつか、出来るだけ近い将来に、また仕事に専念できる独立した工房を開設して、それを糧にして家族の生活の安定化を徐々に歩み始めるのが今唯一の希望なのです。

友人として、せめて消失した工具や素材を徐々に買い戻させて、一日も早く夢の再スタートが切れる手助けが出来たらと思い、このファンドを起こしました。多くの方々がこの支援に賛同して頂ければ幸いです。是非とも、温かいご声援とご協力を、宜しくお願い致します。
