Small Family Dairy Farm Needs Your Help

This flood has been devastating for so many people, including the Baumgardner Dairy in Mt. Vernon. This farm is owned and lovingly operated by three generations of the Baumgardner Family. They have suffered unimaginable losses...

 

The Flood

Everyone worked tirelessly to prepared for the flood as best they could and moved the cows to the safety of higher ground. Everyone prayed the "Girls" would stay safe.

 

In the middle of the night, the cows broke through the fence in their desperation to be milked and headed into the water to get to the milking parlor.

The Baumgardner's woke to hearing their cries. The family struggled in frigid, chest deep water for hours trying to save as many as they could. Still...they watched as cow after cow succumb to the cold, collapsing into swift current. 44 have died thus far...

 

Saving the Farm and Recovery

Anyone that knows the Baumgardner's knows that this isn't just their business. It's their way of life. The cows are family. Farming is their passion and it runs deep in their blood. It's going to take a long time for their spirits to recover from the trauma of watching this nightmare unfold. It has been so devastating and it continues as the family, veterinarians and employees of the farm are now working around the clock to save the surviving members of the herd. There will be weeks and months of lost milk and income, sick cows and veterinary bills, and many sad days ahead.
