Small Things Matter Feed Families in Need
Small Things Matter is known for its grocery store-like experience where food insecure families and individuals are able to choose from a wide selection of produce, dairy, bread, and grocery items on a monthly basis for free. Our food program has been growing rapidly in the past few weeks as new families find themselves out of work and asking for assistance for the first time, while those already in need struggle even harder as they are pushed into further hardships by COVID-19.
COVID-19 has had a profound effect on how we now share food with our families. Our team don masks and gloves to safely collect, pack, and distribute produce boxes for 370 families and individuals (over 2000 people) in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring and Rockville communities. Our food donations have become unstable in the past weeks with dairy and grocery items being scarce so we have been purchasing staples such as eggs, milk, rice, dry beans, and boxed cereal to supplement our distributions.
Though Small Things Matter is 100% volunteer run, what we do does cost money and we need your help to keep our program running.
We anticipate an unrecoverable loss of revenue due to the cancellation of our community dinner planned for June and our silent auction that will be moved online, but with many fewer items as in-kind donations have dried up due to shuttered businesses. Our summer revenue which is largely dependent on our concession sales and birthday parties are likely be affected as well. This loss accounts for 75% of our yearly revenue.
We are focused on helping as many families and individuals as possible during this time. We know that there are scary months ahead and that the effects of COVID-19 will go on even once it is safe for us to end our quarantine efforts.
Our thanks to everyone for their kind and continued support. We need your continued help now more than ever to get through this together.
