Smiling Sun Mural Project

Outside Art: Plattsburgh Public Art Project is a community organization that produces and creates public art for Plattsburgh. Outside Art works with local, regional, and international artists to animate public space with the goal that Plattsburgh will become a tourist destination for art and a place for artists to settle and create. In 2020, Plattsburgh Blues & Jazz will help us “Jazz Up” City Hall Place. This project is made possible with the funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts.

In summer 2020, award-winning local artist James Golovach will bring solace to downtown Plattsburgh with an 8 foot sculptural mural inspired by his bright yellow smiling sun sculptures beloved by our year-round residents. The mural will be dedicated to community members who suffer from mental illness.

The "Smiling Sun" Sculpture Mural is an original James Golovach work of art to be installed at 13 City Hall Place. Golovach is a popular regional artist known for his vibrant and detailed paintings and his community service. Creating a permanent sun in downtown Plattsburgh promoting mental health awareness will offer symbolic warmth and joy year-round.

Additionally, Golovach will add a few painted “sun rays” to the brick wall to help brighten up the space. The sun will shine a light on downtown Plattsburgh and welcome visitors and locals, alike.
