Smith Dock wall

We have started this page to help raise funds to relocate two war memorial monuments. Currently the monuments are located in the old Smith’s Dock site in South Bank Middlesbrough and we are planning restore and move them to a more prominent location at Teesport.

The two War Memorials consist of bronze plaques mounted in an oak frame with the names the 60 men who fell during the war and who were employed by Smith’s Dock Company, of which twenty–nine were born in the Middlesbrough area.

The memorial plaques were erected in 1924 at Smith’s Dock shipyard at South Shields, in Tyneside. The monuments were moved to a safer location and erected on a building at Smith’s Docks shipyard in South Bank. In 1986, the shipyard in South Bank closed and the monuments were relocated to Offshore House on Tees Commerce Park, and when Offshore House was demolished earlier this century, they were moved again to a wall at the entrance to that site where they stand today.

We  feel that in the current location not enough people see or even know the monuments are there so together We wish to raise funds to enable us to give these monuments the recognition they deserve by fully renovating and restoring them to their original condition, and then relocating them to a much more prominent and appropriate location at the main entrance to Teesport. Plans have been drawn up to erect a purpose built wall and landscape the area where the memorial will be located to ensure a Permanent and  fitting memorial to the served and fallen heroes of World Wars 1 and 2 and ensure this is the final location for the memorials. The memorial will have three sections holding memorials from World War 1, World War 2 and a section for dock employees who have served in the armed forces and have sadly passed away.

We would be very grateful if you would be willing and able to support our cause with a monetary donation,

The cost of removal and restoration of the monument, building the wall it will be placed on and the paved surrounding area will be in excess of £75,000. All monies will be paid to Friends of Smith’s Dock War Memorial Fund and used to pay for the move of the plaques and build of this new monument.

We propose a grand opening of the memorial. We have many contacts with the armed forces, local government and local businesses and would expect the opening to be a very grand event to honour our heroes who served and for some who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our safety.

Thanks for any support you can give us.
