smokey heart worm process

My name is Nataly, I’m currently a nursing student living on my own. I have a 4 year old German Sheppard named smokey that I got from the animal shelter when I moved out and we went to the vet a few weeks ago to get him checked out due to him being sick, we treated it first with dog steroids. Well today we went for his check up && turns out he has heart worms and hook worms! The recommended way to treat his heart worms cost close to 1400$ which includes all the meds && shots and office visits!
