Snacks for Refugee students in Portland, ME
Donation protected
Hi! My friend Nicole posted a Facebook status the other day, asking her friends for donations to help her students buy snacks. It broke my heart that because I know how hungry kids get during the day, and I asked if she would be open to a go fund me to help her raise money for snacks primarily, but she would love to be able to buy additional supplies for these kids, as they transition to a new life. Here's Nicole's story:
I am a middle school teacher in Portland, Maine. I teach English as a Second Language to newly arriving refugee and asylum seeking children. My language program currently educates 40 children between the ages of 11 and 14 and our class meets everyday for 3 hour sessions at a time. Unfortunately, my school does not have a budget to provide students with snacks. Teachers sell snacks to students for 50 cents each, but only students whose families are able to afford to buy a snack, get a snack.
My students have migrated long and far, sometimes on foot, and most are homeless and food insecure. These students' families do not have 50 cents a day to give to their children to buy a snack. They also don't have food to give them to bring to school. These families are trying to survive and make a better life for themselves and their children. They care very deeply about their children's wellbeing and education.
However, their path to safety and self sufficiency are long and difficult. Therefore, I am reaching out as a caring teacher, cultural broker, child advocate, and parent myself, to raise funds so that I can provide my students with one snack each day to boost their energy, nourish their bodies and minds, and increase their academic potential. I will only be providing healthy snacks such as fruit, vegetables, cereal bars, and graham crackers. I will not be using funds to feed children sugary, junk food.
If you are able to help our cause, please consider a donation to my classroom for snacks. Gratefully, Ms. Myers, King Middle School, Room 228
