Sober October for Shane

Hi everyone, for the 31 days of the month of October I will be raising funds for Donate Life Florida, the organ and tissue donation group that my 20-year-old brother Shane donated to in 2023. This is part of Sober October. Click here for more info.

This fundraiser has two main goals.

The first is to raise awareness about addiction and overdose, by focusing on having fun and living life while sober. I won’t be drinking for the duration of the month. I will be sharing my experience online and reposting information regarding Irish and American outreach campaigns about harm reduction and help for drug and alcohol addiction. Education and compassion are key factors in creating a support system for people battling addiction.

The second is to raise funds for the crucial work that Donate Life Florida does, giving life-saving organ and tissue donations to those in critical need.

If you’re able, you can donate the price of a pint/a beer/a cocktail in your area, or any amount you’d like to and are in a position to! Otherwise, a simple share or repost would be so appreciated. Euro and dollar donations accepted.

Shane was my little brother and a cool, charismastic, and deeply caring young adult. He could make a room glow with his energy. He was working full-time at a golf course and loved going golfing and exploring with his friends. Shane would send me photos of sunrise on the golf course in the early mornings. He was looking into colleges and training hard for a triathlon right up until his untimely death.

Overdose can affect anyone and whether someone is trying something just once, or dealing with an active addiction, doesn’t make that individual a “bad” person. I believe strongly in de-risking experimentation and spreading information about what to do to test drugs and how to recognise signs of a budding issue with drugs/alcohol. Every person deserves to live a happy, healthy, and safe life, and this GoFundMe campaign honours Shane’s life and how he chose to be an organ donor while still living to continue the lives of others once he was gone.
