"In the process of telling the truth about what you feel or what you see, each of us has to get in touch with himself or herself in a really deep, serious way." -June Jordan

Our names are Erin Cavanaugh, Lauren Daus, and Gabriel De La Cruz and we work at June Jordan School for Equity (JJSE) in San Francisco. We are raising money to provide students who are traditionally marginalized access to opportunities they otherwise would not have, outside of the Bay Area.

As June Jordan said, it is important for us to get in touch with ourselves in a deep way, for us to tell our truths. As a school rooted in social justice, our mission is for our students to build community, stand against oppression, and develop themselves as intellectuals. From May 14-May 21, 2019, 18 students (11th & 12th graders) from JJSE will participate in college tours and experience the diverse cultures of Los Angeles and Orange County. During this journey, our hope is for our students to get in touch with themselves and share what they feel and see.

Some of the colleges we will be visiting are UCLA, USC, UC Irvine, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Fullerton, and Cal State Long Beach.

In addition, students will be learning about the different communities in Southern California, such as Chinatown & Koreatown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Boyle Heights, Echo Park, Anaheim, Westminster, Long Beach, and Cerritos. To further understand the histories and cultures of these communities, we will be visiting places such as Homeboy Industries, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Historic Filipinotown’s Unidad Park, Anaheim Packing District, and Cerritos Library. Lastly, we’d love to have a day of fun at Universal Studios Hollywood!

If we reach our goal, we will be able to pay for the following:

1) 3 SUV rentals & fuel

2) House rental in Long Beach

3) 3 meals a day for 6 days for 18 students & 3 chaperones

4) 21 tickets to Universal Studios Hollywood

Our students will be graduating from high school within the next year, and our hope is for them to see themselves in higher education and/or in places of power in the near future. When we come back from our trip, our students will create their own vision boards and come up with an action plan to share what they learned with their peers, family, and community.

Our students come from working class families and communities of color. Your contribution is highly appreciated, as it will support our students in imagining the different possibilities of their future. On behalf of us and our students, we appreciate your support and look forward to sharing our experience with you all!
