Southern Cal Youth Select Side Rugby

The Southern California Youth Rugby JUNIOR VARSITY All Star Team (AKA So.Cal Griffins Select Side), are represented by the top 30 JUNIOR VARSITY High School Rugby Players (birth years of 95 & 96) from the Central California & Southern California areas (Atascadero to San Diego). Every year Griffins representative teams such as this one, assemble to compete in high level All-Star Tournaments. This year the Griffins will again be traveling back Aurora, CO on June 14th to compete in The Rocky Mountain Challenge HS 15's All-Star Tournament to defend the title that was won last year by the U17 Team. This is a very prestigious event where the USA High School All American Coaches, Selectors and College Scouts gather to invite/recruit the next crop of outstanding young rugby players. Last year from our U17 Team 10 players were invited to the High School All American (HSAA) Winter Camp in Tempe Arizona, where five of those players were selected to represent the USA HSAA rugby team on tours to England in March 2013.

This year, the JV team and select players( (95) will also be traveling to Vancouver British Columbia, on July 12, 2013 to play in the BC Youth International 7's www.bcrugby.com. The idea for the BC 7's is to get our players exposed to more high level rugby matches and fast track their development. Both events are also really great opportunities for our young players to be seen by international, USA Rugby and college coaches & selectors.

It's exciting times for US with Rugby. With Rugby set to take part in the 2016 Olympic Games, and the US holding the only Gold Medal from the last time (1924) Rugby was played in the games. Even with the excitement and despite rapid growth in Rugby, funding for the sport is non existent pretty much at all levels, especially at the Youth level. We have many players that really depend on donations and scholarships from fundraising activities to give them the opportunities to go on tour to these tournaments so that they not only have the same opportunity as other players as far as being seen by the HS-All American and College Rugby Scouts/Coaches/Selectors, but also the experience of living and getting to know other teammates that come from different backgrounds, schools and walks of life! Truly Life Changing Events!

This is where you can make a difference! Our goal is to raise the $30,000 needed by July 10, 2013. This will allow us to defray the costs for each player to less than $100.00/player. All donations are tax deductible and all donors will receive an official receipt with the appropriate tax id.
