S.O.F.B.A Educational & Health Relief for Haiti

Tax deductible
Societe Des Fils De Baguette Inc- The Society of the Sons and Daughters of Baguette (S.O.F.B.A.), is a Non-Profit, apolitical, humanitarian association,  founded on August 31st 1986.

Its purpose is to unite the efforts of the members and friends of the 11th rural region of LaMontagne, Jacmel in Haiti, to take part in the development of this community. Our ambitions span the areas of Health Care, Education, Reforestation/Agriculture, Economy, etc. The S.O.F.B.A. Organization endeavors to use all resources – human, material and spiritual, in order to attain these goals.

LaMontagne has a population of 25,000 to 30,000 residents, of which 30% are under the age of 18. A community of people who suffer as a result of limited health care resources and poor educational system.

During its 34 years of existence, SOFBA, despite its weak economic resources, has participated in and realized several small projects in the region of LaMontagne. Due to our efforts, today the community of Bellevue has a functioning clinic hospital; also a public library who serves more than 25,000 people.

The Library

SOFBA’s efforts to complete a library in the community of Bellevue coincided with our drive to help bolster education in LaMontagne. It opened to the public in 2012  and has since been a vital resource.

Dispensaire De Bellevue

With the combined efforts of our sister organization, Men Kontre Dayiti, community volunteers and fundraising support, the Dispensaire  De  Bellevue was open to the public in 2006. The dispensary gives primary care and first aid to more than 50 people per month. Locals in the area are also invited to attend sanitation education classes conducted by the staff.

Education

The public secondary school “Lycée” does not have its own space. It currently shares the public primary school "Ecole Nationale" from 2:00pm until 5:00pm. SOFBA is studying the possibility of building a site for the high school.

Reforestation

Haiti’s forests have succumbed to deforestation going back centuries, back to when France held the country as a colony in the 1800s. Losing lush forests has not only wreaked havoc on wildlife, but also contributed to severe erosion.
“Without forests, there’s no root system to support the soil. So when they have an earthquake or hurricane, soil disappears, and when the soil disappears, their crops and their homes go along with it.”
SOFBA has developed projects dedicated to replanting of trees to help improve the deforestation crisis.

Clean Water

Our upcoming projects include a Clean Water Initiative. Bellevue has only one system for drinkable water, located in the Richon neighborhood. It serves 1,500 people in the neighborhoods of Bellevue, La Ferme, Plaisance, Terre Rouge, Bois d’Orme, Guano and Bambou.

A Message from Verbo Jean Julien (VP Marketing/President of Centre d'Education (CEI)-Haiti):

"We must all come together to develop community and family resilience at this time. Now, here in Hispaniola Island, Dominicans and Haitians die in the pandemic because we lack information and education about this virus. The sad news today is that in the southeast of Haiti, near my home town, Jacmel, Cotes- de- fer (district), there is 1 of 4 deaths with Covid-19 according to the health authorities (MSPP). With SOFBA's support, Centre d'Education (CEI) along with other members of the community, we are doing all we can to provide families, communities, community leaders and organizations with all the information we can gather about Covid-19. We want to donate more home-made handwashing stations to hundreds of families. Each full handwashing station costs about $17 USD.  Now, we have found a new cost efficient strategy which would require the buying of just parts and accessories needed to assemble the handwashing station; 150 accessories for up to 150 families. We transport these parts with the help of volunteers to each community. In every single community, we will ask every family to bring one bucket, so we can make  the handwashing station right away for the family. With this approach, we will have the opportunity to help hundreds of families. Parts and accessories cost together $7.50 USD +$ 2.50 for transportation and snack for volunteers. Teachers have come on as volunteers along side with MSPP, DPC and local authority personnel.  With your donations, together we can get through this and make a difference.
Please help us save lives and limit the numbers of deaths and infected people by providing updated information and handwashing stations."

The Global Pandemic

A 2019 study reported that for a population of more than 11 million, Haiti only has an estimated 124 Intensive care unit (ICU) beds and 64 ventilators. Haiti has reported 663 cases of the novel coronavirus, and has carried just over 2,100 tests since the first cases were detected on March 19, 2020. On the 5th of  April, the country confirmed its first death from COVID-19. On April 12th, The Intercept wrote that, "The Haitian government has closed schools and most factories and is encouraging people to adopt social distancing measures."

On May 5, 2020, Dr. Etienne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization, expressed her worries about Haiti. "There are already 17,000 repatriates and that number is expected to rise to 55,000." Etienne called the situation “a perfect storm approaching.”

CounterPunch wrote on April 1, 2020, "Although Haiti's resources are limited, the government response needs to incorporate economic relief for the population, especially for street vendors, factory workers, and small business owners, many of whom rely on the informal economy to make a living. The government, however, has thus far relied on monetary policy ― increasing access to credit through the central bank and relaxing repayment schedules. This, however, is likely to have only a limited impact for the vast majority of Haitians. Without greater international assistance, it is unlikely the government will have the fiscal resources available to properly support the population throughout the crisis. Nevertheless, it is increasingly clear, as with the 2010 earthquake, that the Haitian government will not be able to adequately respond to the current crisis without increased support from the international community."

Your donation will go towards the support of SOFBA's many on-going projects as well as the purchase of gloves, cleaning supplies, making of masks, and assembly of hand washing stations for the region of LaMontagne in Jacmel, Haiti. Any donation will help make an impact, expand our reach, save lives and restore hope.  Please join SOFBA in making a difference.

Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause.
