I want to tell you a great story, a painful but beautiful story, of which I have the honor of the leading roll. My name is Sofía Rodríguez, I was born on November 8, 2015, in Valencia, Venezuela. That day doctors handed me to my mommy's arms still asleep. She tried breast feeding me so many times but ended surprised to see that I was completely unable to suckle. My mom continued trying with my dad’s help with absolutely no success, and this is where my beautiful and long road begun.

Having suckle disorders, swallowing disorders and general weakness I was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Northern Metropolitan Hospital (Hospital Metropolitano del Norte) in Valencia, Venezuela, for twelve days. From there I was discharged with a bewildering diagnosis:  Microcephaly. With no apparent explanation for the diagnosis.

At home, difficulties are now starting. I now often choke on my own saliva, I’m presenting strong muscular spasms and involuntary movements that don’t allow me to rest. At four months old doctors had to intervene with a gastrostomy so I could be feed, at eight months old there was no running away from a tracheotomy so I could breathe easier and reach my oxygen levels, of which I have had very low saturation all this time, and it could permanently damage my brain on even more complicated ways.

After this last intervention I spent 10 days hospitalized with signs of a nosocomial infection. Thankfully I was discharged one more time, but soon after getting home I had a relapse that kept me 52 days in the intensive care unit of Dr. Rafael Guerra Mendez Medical Center, fighting several times against pneumonia and endocarditis.

Currently I’m home, I have a central venous catheter or central line to receive all my medication, because since July 12, 2016, I have a very strong bacterium infection by Klebsiella and I struggle daily to be able to get rid of it. It’s very difficult since I still have my gastrostomy and tracheotomy.

Today, I wish to touch your hearts asking you to contribute with my family to pay off a very big hospital debt from my last hospitalization and to help them be able to ensure the necessary treatment I need at home, with my weekly devices exchange, with the cost of the nursing staff helping my parents and the costly examinations and medicines I need on a daily base.

I wish to also ask you for the most valuable of all contributions: Please keep me in your prayers.

If you wish to know more about my story, of what I go through every day, of my progress and struggles, you may find me on Instagram as: @nuestra_guerrera_sofi

In behalf of my parents and I, thank you so very much.

...............................................................................................................

Muchas gracias.
