Solid Roots 2024: A WILDways School Fundraiser

“A person has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when they plant shade trees under which they know full well they will never sit.”

The Wells Destination School Society is excited to announce the opening of the WILDways high school program starting this September! WILDways is best described as a place-based, blended learning program that encourages personalized learning, student empowerment, and strong community involvement. The school is located in the small community of Wells, B.C., on the unceded traditional territories of the Lhtako Dene Nation, a shared territory with the Dakelh and Secwépemc peoples.

On June 15th, we're going to plant 15,000 trees within view of the District of Wells. For every $1.00 you donate a tree will be planted!

This is our 2nd annual Solid Roots fundraiser and last year we raised $30,000! Last year's fundraising is going towards building accommodations for the students which will be started on this summer.
This year the money that we raise will go towards operational costs for our first year running the school program.

No Cash? No Problem!
There are plenty of other ways you can help the Wells Destination School Society meet our goals. For example, do you:
Know someone in media who would want to write about us?
Want to sponsor us as business owner?
Want to raise the awareness of the work we are doing here in Wells?

Why Education, Why Wells?
Improve the quality of education for our high school students
Improve the health of our youth as a 3-hour bus ride to be educated takes its toll (there is often higher absenteeism)
Retention of families (often leave when their children reach grade 8)
Improve the health of our community by filling a demographic void (there are very few teenagers in our town)
Create a more sustainable population base, as access to primary and secondary education is a prerequisite for families that would otherwise choose to move to Wells.

In community conversations dating back to 2016, Wells has identified a gap in our local education system for young adults between the ages of 13 and 17. The loss of education opportunities for these young people has a tertiary effect on every generation living in Wells, from the families of these young people to small business owners.
