Free menstrual products for 5 000 factory workers in Myanmar

In solidarity with factory workers in Myanmar - Menstrual products for all who need them!

Imagine you're in pain, you're bleeding, but you cannot leave work. Not only do you risk consequences - you physically cannot leave the premises without the permission of your boss.

That is the reality for thousands of female workers at garment factories in South and South East Asia. Especially in Myanmar, the situation got even worse within the past four years, since the military forcibly took power, (re)installing a dictatorship. Even when the female workers are on their period they have to work overtime, six days a week and without proper sanitary facilites. In addition, the prices for menstrual pads have been rising so high, that most workers cannot afford them anymore. The toilets aren't clean, there's trash all over the place, the lights aren't working properly and many workers are forced to use left over fabric from the garment factories as pads, often resulting in infections and allergies.

Not just in Myanmar - affected people all over the world have to pay for their menstrual products and need to perform like anyone else on their jobs while suffering from pain and bleeding. Some are worse off than others as pain is always individual, and the various factors that lead to pain affect each person differently and vary from day to day.

In some countries, like South Korea, Taiwan and Sambia, some form of a right menstrual leave was introduced already. Also, in Spain a similar regulation was just passed in 2023. Looking at these examples, there is no excuse for other countries not to follow suit!

For now we want to support female workers inside factories in Myanmar with menstrual products of their choice. Workers who manufacture the garments for brands such as H&M, Zara, Vero Moda, Only, New Yorker or Hunkemöller. Activists of the Federation of General Workers Myanmar, FGWM, will distribute the products to their members. We can only do this with your support! At the shops on the ground, one pack of pads costs around 1.80 Euros. With a volume discount for our action, we are able to purchase the pads for a cheaper price. In total we aim for a sum of 15 000 Euros, which will enable us to provide around 5 000 workers with 5 packs of pads.

Together with the workers on the ground we support the following demands of FGWM:

1. Free menstrual products at the workplace or the payment of a bonus equal to the cost of these products!

2. Paid leave during menstruation period and a guarantee that workers can leave the factory or have the possibility to rest at the factory clinic!

3. Adjustment of workload for pregnant or menstruating workers and dropping of compulsory production targets!

4. Ensuring clean toilets, drinking water, soap and additional garbage bins for menstrual products at all factories!

5. Providing necessary healthcare for female workers at the workplace - also during their menstruation period!

6. Provide contraceptives for free or pay a refund!

Our demands are directed at the factory owners as well as the clothing brands, who mainly profit from the exploitation inside the factories. They must ensure that the required conditions are met in the factories they source from!

The factory unions on the ground affiliated to FGWM confirm that production is currently taking place for the following brands:

Solidarisch mit Fabrikarbeiter*innen in Myanmar - Menstruationsprodukte für alle, die sie brauchen!

Stell dir vor: du hast Schmerzen, du blutest, kannst aber die Arbeit nicht verlassen. Du riskierst nicht nur Konsequenzen, nein, du kannst deinen Arbeitsplatz ohne die Erlaubnis deines Vorgesetzten einfach nicht verlassen.

Das ist die Realität von Tausenden von Arbeiter*innen, die in der Textilindustrie in Süd- und Südostasien tätig sind. Vor allem in Myanmar hat sich die Situation in den vergangenen vier Jahren noch verschärft, seit das Militär die Macht übernommen und (wieder) eine Diktatur errichtet hat.

Selbst während der Periode müssen Fabrikarbeiter*innen Überstunden machen, sechs Tage die Woche arbeiten und das ohne angemessene sanitäre Anlagen. Die Toiletten der Fabriken sind dreckig, überall liegt Müll, das Licht ist kaputt und gezwungenermaßen werden Stoffreste aus den Fabriken anstelle von Binden eingesetzt, was immer wieder zu Infektionen und Allergien führt. Zusätzlich sind die Preise für Menstruationsprodukte so stark gestiegen, dass die betroffenen Personen sich diese nicht mehr leisten können.

Nicht nur in Myanmar - überall auf der Welt müssen betroffene Menschen selbst für Menstruationsprodukte aufkommen, die gleiche Arbeit machen wie alle anderen, während sie bluten und unter Schmerzen leiden. Dabei trifft es einige schlimmer als andere, Schmerz ist immer individuell. Auch die verschiedenen Faktoren, die zu Schmerzen führen, wirken sich bei jeder Person anders aus und sind von Tag zu Tag verschieden.

Es gibt bereits einige Länder wie Südkorea, Taiwan und Sambia, die in irgendeiner Form ein Recht auf Menstruationsurlaub haben. Auch Spanien hat erst kürzlich, im Jahr 2023, eine ähnliche Regelung eingeführt. Es gibt also keinen Grund, entsprechende Änderungen nicht auch in anderen Ländern durchzusetzen!

Mit diesem Fundraising unterstützen wir Arbeiter*innen in den Fabriken in Myanmar mit Menstruationsprodukten ihrer Wahl. Sie stellen für Marken wie H&M, Zara, Vero Moda, Only, New Yorker oder Hunkemöller die Klamotten her. Aktive der Basisgewerkschaft Federation of General Workers Myanmar, FGWM, werden die Produkte an rund 5000 Mitglieder verteilen. Und dafür brauchen wir Eure Unterstützung! Eine Packung Binden kostet im Geschäft dort etwa 1,80 Euro. Mit einem Mengenrabatt für diese Aktion, können wir natürlich deutlich mehr kaufen. Insgesamt streben wir eine Gesamtsumme von 15 000 Euro an.

Gemeinsam mit den Arbeiter*innen vor Ort unterstützen wir die folgenden Forderungen der FGWM:

1. Bereitstellung von Menstruationsprodukten am Arbeitsplatz oder eine zusätzliche Vergütung für die Kosten der Produkte!

2. Bezahlte Freistellung während der Menstruation und die Möglichkeit, die Fabrik zu verlassen oder ausreichende Ruhepausen in der Werksklinik!

3. Keine verbindlichen Zielvorgaben für schwangere oder menstruierende Personen und weniger schwere / angemessen Aufgaben!

4. Saubere Toiletten, Trinkwasser, Seife und extra Mülleimer für Menstruationsprodukte!

5. Angemessene medizinische Versorgung der Arbeiter*innen am Arbeitsplatz - auch während der Menstruation!

6. Die kostenlose Bereitstellung von Schwangerschaftsverhütungsmitteln bzw. die entsprechende Kostenerstattung!

Unsere Forderungen richten sich an die Fabrikbesitzer (in der Tat fast ausschließlich männlich), aber auch an die Klamottenmarken, die überwiegend von der Ausbeutung in den Fabriken profitieren. Sie haben sicherzustellen, dass in den Fabriken, die geforderten Bedingungen gegeben sind!

Die Fabrikgewerkschaften vor Ort, die zur FGWM gehören, bestätigen, dass für folgende Marken aktuell produziert wird:
