Sonia Martinez Memorial Services

Sonia Martinez' story is uplifting and beautiful. She came to this country as a political refugee with nothing and worked three jobs to support her sons: Mario, Mauricio, and Richard. None of us made it any easier on her. Whether it was Mauricio sneaking out of school for Tommy's 50 cent burgers on their 50th anniversary only to learn my mom watched and recorded him on the news, or any of the other countless headaches three boys could cause, my mom took it in stride and raised us to be the best versions of ourselves and we're all better father's and husbands because of her. She was a devoted grandmother and even though her bones ached from her age and long days at work, she'd help put our newborn baby girl to sleep, change diapers, and she worked tirelessly to make each of her grandchildren feel loved, valued, and important. To them she was "Mama Sonia" but only because "grandma" made her feel old. She was truly the warmest, most loving person in the world... if she liked you. Sonia was unbeatable! Not because she'd never lose, but because she'd never quit. When working towards her cosmetologist license, Sonia studied and did everything she could to pass. She failed; multiple times and she'd get sad and cry for a bit and then she'd say to us, "you know what? I'm gonna pass that test!" She eventually passed and that's only one of her many achievements. She went on to learn to make pastries, nails, she was a Doula, and was currently working on her life insurance license, and was enrolled in college. Sonia had hopes for the future and always talked about how her hard work would be worth the effort if she could just provide a better future for us. She was the epitome of what a mom, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend should be and was taken from us too soon. I had just gone back to work after the mandatory quarantine and my mom wanted to make something special for us. So she walked to the grocery store to get a few of the items she needed and was struck by a vehicle at approximately 40 mph. She held on for as long as she could, but succumbed to her injuries later that day. Our family is broken; Sonia was the glue that held all of us together and she will be sorely missed.  We need your help to cover the costs of her memorial services, hospital bills, and other expenses. Any amount helps and if you can't donate then please share this link so my mom's story can be shared and maybe even help touch the lives of others.
