Sonia's Brain Cancer Treatment Fundraiser

My name is Diana McGuigan, and I'm starting this fundraiser for our beloved sister, Sonia Scott. Along with being a wonderful sister, a great friend, and an all around amazing human being, she is also the mom of four beautiful children. She's in the fight of her life right now and we want to do everything we can to make sure that she wins.
Throughout last year, Sonia began experiencing unexplained headaches. However, due to the pandemic, access to her GP was limited and those headaches were not as thoroughly examined as they might otherwise have been. Then, in August, she had her first seizure.
The battery of scans that followed her first seizure and subsequent biopsy revealed a grade 4 IDH-wildtype glioblastoma in her brain. Glioblastoma is an aggressive type of brain cancer and can be very difficult to treat. Unfortunately, Sonia's tumor was also inoperable. (This is the same disease that recently took the life of the singer Tom Parker.) It goes without saying, this was devastating news.
Sonia was incredibly brave in that moment and she has continued to be courageous in this fight each and every day since.
Sonia completed her radiation treatment alongside her first chemo treatment in February and she then started her 6 month course of just chemo. After completing her second round of chemo, an MRI was carried out and unfortunately, the scans show that the tumor has grown with two new enhancements.
The one-two punch of managing the effects of chemo while also keeping the seizures at bay has taken a big toll on her body.
She and her doctors are doing all they can, but, unfortunately, glioblastoma research lags behind many other cancers and the standard of care through the NHS hasn't really changed much in nearly 20 years. She is dedicated to her course of treatment though, and her family and friends are equally dedicated to making sure that we're doing everything we can to support her in this fight.
Alongside her chemotherapy treatments, there are other therapies that she can take part in that may either help slow the growth of the tumor or relieve some of the side effects of the radiation and chemo. In addition, our hope is to also help her get access to other specialists in this area to get further guidance.
However, all these things require additional funds. That's why we have started this campaign to assist Sonia in accessing other types of care that will allow her to continue this fight.
