Sophia's 3rd Cancer Journey - #SophiaStrong

My little sister Sophia has relapsed with Ewing's Sarcoma Cancer for the third time. Ewing's Sarcoma is an aggressive, rare, and rapidly growing cancer that is mostly common in children. My sister, Sophia, was diagnosed with cancer at age 15 in January 2019. This Cancer was originally found near her spine, and it relapsed there for the second time in 2021. This time, it has relapsed in her head, near her brain and skull. With this being said, our family was shocked, heartbroken, and devastated by this news on July 20, 2023.

My sister has always received her treatments in Kansas City. Unfortunately, our family lives four hours away. So travel costs are essential to travel to and from Kansas City. My sister will have to undergo chemotherapy and radiation all over again.

With this being said, financial toxicity has always been a burden. I have had to watch my mother travel weekly to Kansas City and back to Hays with my sister for her treatments, check-ups, appointments, etc. while Sophia has battled cancer for 5 years. Travel costs normally include, but are not limited to, sturdy and safe vehicle tires, multiple gas fill-ups, personal car mileage, many food and drink costs on the road, hotel expenses, travel necessities, groceries, etc.

With all of these expenses piling up, it is challenging to keep up with monthly bills, meals, electricity, insurance on vehicles, and extra costs at home in Hays.
