A campaign organized by the Amazonía Support Group in memory of psychedelic cumbia musicians Raul Llerena (Ranil) and the brothers Emerson and Jairo ‘Didi’ Sanchez (Los Wembler’s de Iquitos).

SOS IQUITOS
As the capital of the Peruvian Amazon, Iquitos, with an urban density of around a million people, is the largest isolated city in the world, reachable only by boat or plane and surrounded by the vastness of the rainforest. Iquitos is a buzzing multicultural city that sprang to modernity during the late 19th century’s rubber fever and is home of legendary musicians who in the 1960s and 1970s combined the hedonism of acid rock with the mystics of Ayahuasca visions to give birth to the irresistible psychedelic cumbia.
In April 2020, the Coronavirus relentlessly spread through the region of Loreto - a region already plagued by lack of basic healthcare, corrupt authorities and a recent outburst of dengue fever- placing enormous pressure on its metropolitan capital as well as its surrounding areas.
‘We are living in a catastrophe’
In late April and within a few days, the legendary musician, educator and local politician Raul Llerena, known artistically as Ranil, succumbed in the midst of this crisis; shortly after, the two brothers Jairo ‘Didi’ and Emerson Sanchez from the band “Los Wembler’s de Iquitos” met the same fate. While the news of their passing shook the tropical music scene worldwide, theirs are only a few among many personal stories currently repeating on a daily basis throughout the Peruvian Amazon. The Amazonía Support Group have joined forces in order to help alleviate this problem, in memory of Ranil and the Wembler’s family, musicians who dedicated their life to bring joy to the people of their community.
WHO WE ARE
The Amazonía Support Group sprang to life when Samy Ben Redjeb from the music label Analog Africa travelled to Peru to finally meet with Ranil, hand him copies of his new record and discuss further future plans. This meeting never took place as Ranil tragically lost his life in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak. This change of fate and the lockdown experience in Peru left Samy devastated. When he returned to Germany he exchanged ideas with different members of the global music scene who he personally knew, and who had collaborated with Ranil. Together we decided to launch the Amazonia Support Group officially and worldwide in order to raise awareness not only among the tropical music scene but beyond: Not only Iquitos but also other areas of the Amazon that are under threat. Together we can make a difference! In memory of Raul Llerena, the Sanchez brothers, and with affection for all of those who continue to struggle in this ongoing crisis. 
WHO WE DONATE TO
The Vicariato Apostólico de Iquitos is a small catholic organisation led by father and medical doctor Raymond Portelli and father Miguel Fuertes. These two figures, highly involved with and respected by the community of Iquitos, including the family of Ranil, have launched a crusade to provide sanitary and medical aid, having already acquired an oxygen plant after an initial donation. But there is much more to be done, as we were told by father Portelli during a brief phone communication. The city of Iquitos needs at least another oxygen plant as well as immediate supply of oxygen flasks and life-saving medications such as azithromycin, ivermectin, corticoids, paracetamol and inhalators.
We will also be coordinating the purchase and shipping of medicine other aid material from Lima towards Iquitos with the help of medical groups operating in the capital.
A small amount of the funds will be donated to the family of Ranil and the surviving Wembler's brothers

Como capital de la Amazonia peruana, Iquitos, con una densidad urbana de alrededor de un millón de personas, es la ciudad aislada más grande del mundo, a la que sólo se puede llegar en barco o en avión y está rodeada por la inmensidad de la selva. Iquitos es una animada ciudad multicultural que saltó a la modernidad durante la fiebre del caucho de finales del siglo XIX y es el hogar de legendarios músicos que en los años 60 y 70 combinaron el hedonismo del rock ácido con las visiones místicas del Ayahuasca para dar nacimiento a la irresistible cumbia psicodélica.
En abril de 2020, el Coronavirus se propagó implacablemente por la región de Loreto -una región ya plagada de falta de atención sanitaria básica, autoridades corruptas y un reciente brote de dengue- ejerciendo una enorme presión sobre su capital metropolitana y sus zonas circundantes.
A finales de abril, tras pocos días, el legendario músico, educador y político local Raúl Llerena, conocido artísticamente como Ranil, sucumbió en medio de esta crisis; poco después, los dos hermanos Jairo 'Didi' y Emerson Sánchez de la banda "Los Wembler's de Iquitos" corrieron la misma suerte. Si bien la noticia de su fallecimiento sacudió la escena de la música tropical en todo el mundo, las suyas son sólo algunas de las muchas historias personales que se repiten actualmente a diario en toda la Amazonía peruana. El Grupo de Apoyo de la Amazonía ha unido fuerzas para ayudar a aliviar este problema, en memoria de Ranil y la familia Wembler’s, músicos que dedicaron su vida a llevar alegría a la gente de su comunidad.
QUIENES SOMOS
El Amazonía Support Group cobró vida cuando Samy Ben Redjeb, del sello musical Analog Africa, viajó a Perú para finalmente reunirse con Ranil, entregarle copias de su nuevo disco y discutir planes futuros. Esta reunión nunca tuvo lugar ya que Ranil perdió trágicamente su vida en medio del brote de COVID-19. Este cambio de destino y la experiencia del encierro en Perú dejaron a Samy devastado. Cuando regresó a Alemania, intercambió ideas con diferentes miembros de la escena musical mundial que conocía personalmente, y que habían colaborado con Ranil. Juntos decidimos lanzar el Amazonía Support Group oficialmente y en todo el mundo para aumentar la conciencia no sólo entre la escena de la música tropical, sino más allá: No sólo Iquitos, sino también otras áreas de la Amazonía están bajo amenaza. ¡Juntos podemos hacer la diferencia! En memoria de Raúl Llerena, los hermanos Sánchez, y con afecto para todos aquellos que siguen luchando en esta crisis en curso.
A QUIENES DONAMOS
El Vicariato Apostólico de Iquitos es una pequeña organización católica dirigida por el padre y el médico Raymond Portelli y el padre Miguel Fuertes. Estas dos figuras, muy involucradas y respetadas por la comunidad de Iquitos, incluyendo la familia de Ranil, han lanzado una cruzada para proporcionar ayuda sanitaria y médica, habiendo ya adquirido una planta de oxígeno después de una donación inicial. Pero hay mucho más por hacer, como nos dijo el padre Portelli durante una breve comunicación telefónica. La ciudad de Iquitos necesita al menos otra planta de oxígeno, así como el suministro inmediato de frascos de oxígeno (valorados en 800 USD por unidad en este momento) y medicamentos que salven vidas como azitromicina, ivermectina, corticoides, paracetamol e inhaladores.
También coordinaremos la compra y el envío de medicinas y otros materiales de ayuda desde Lima hacia Iquitos con la ayuda de los grupos médicos que operan en la capital.
Una pequeña cantidad de los fondos será donada a la familia de Ranil y a los hermanos Wembler's.
