Sosua Flood Recovery

Donation protected
On Tuesday, April 16th, 2024, the town of Sosua, Dominican Republic was unexpectedly hit with extremely heavy rain. Flash floods swept through low lying communities, turning main roads, and narrow local side roads into rushing rivers. With no warning, the flood waters quickly rose, rushing into local towns and villages, washing away everything that was worked so hard for. It was complete chaos and devastation.

My name is Nic Fowler and my family and I are Canadian expats of the Dominican Republic. With being fortunate enough to have a secured roof over our heads, generators for consistent power and the means of stocking our cupboards with food, our hearts immediately went to those local families that are part of our every day lives, their families and all of their well being.

After receiving videos and photos of floating furniture, vehicles tipped on their sides and 4+ feet of water flooding our gardeners home, we knew we had to do something!

On the ground locally, I am working with some amazing people who have so graciously given their time to help organize multiple days of donation collections and village visits. From baby food, dried goods, and personal hygiene products, to furniture, small appliances and generators - our expat community has truly stepped up and answered the call to action. I am so proud!

However, in saying that and feeling so very thankful for all the support, more is needed. And urgently. Many communities are still picking up the pieces and cleaning up from the aftermath. Families are sleeping on floors, scrounging for food and struggling to support their families. A lot of clean up is still needed as well. The infrastructure in the local villages is not strong. Sewers were backed up, filling streets and flooding homes with extremely hazardous waters.

This is where I kneel and ask for your gracious support!

On average, a "good" local salary here in the Dominican Republic is $300 USD a month. During a good month, feeding a family on that salary and paying the bills is tough enough. Now, after the flooding, families are forced with many decisions; buy food and sleep on the floor, buy a mattress(s) and go hungry etc.

I'm asking for your help! Any amount that you are able to donate will 100% positively impact our efforts and help change these beautiful people's lives.

Here is how your donations will provide relief:

Beds/Mattresses
Small Refrigerators
Generators
Clean Water & Food
Clothing
Personal Hygiene Products
Baby Food, Formula & Necessities
First Aid Equipment
Construction Materials - Presentative Maintenance
Etc.

Again, no matter how big or how small - your support and donations will be a massively impactful blessing.

From the bottom of my heart,

Thank you!

Nic
