South Bend Riley Athletics

Donation protected
James Whitcomb Riley High School basketball is rich with tradition and has provided youth with opportunities to compete in athletics and earn college scholarships for many years. Currently, our team needs your help to raise money for basic needs like jerseys, shoes, team t-shirts and travel. Your donation will literally help pay for the jerseys our student athletes are competing in representing South Bend Riley. Please give what you can by Sunday November 22nd, 2020 to open doors of future opportunities to our youth!

Beyond the basic need for jerseys etc, below you will find the life changing benefits of playing high school sports.

COLLEGE- High school athletes are 15% more likely to attend college.
POSITIVE MENTORS- While being a part of high school athletics, students learn to work with a wide range of authority figures. These mentors teach them important lessons about hard work, respect, and good sportsmanship.
ATTENDANCE- Students who participate in athletics have proven they are less likely to miss school.
GRADES- On average student-athlete GPA’s are boosted from a 2.68 to a 2.84 if participating in a sport.
HIGH RISK BEHAVIOR- Athletes are far less likely to use drugs, smoke cigarettes or carry a gun. Students who do NOT participate in extra-curricular activities are 49% more likely to use drugs.
PHYSICAL HEALTH- If participating and remain physical active, then students are 1/10 less likely to experience obesity, heart disease, stroke or even cancer.
MENTAL HEALTH- An outlet for kids to relieve stress.
GRADUATION- More than 97% of student athletes graduated from high school, which is 10% higher than regular students.
COMMUNITY- These students learn to represent their community in a positive way.
TEAMWORK- Kids learn to work with each other to achieve a common goal. They find that all roles have an impact on the team.
SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPS- Close relationships are formed, which help with mental health. Those relationships often last beyond high school years.
LEADERSHIP- Athletes see examples of leadership at a younger age and can develop their own leadership skills, which are displayed both on and off the court.
TIME MANAGEMENT- They learn to balance life, schoolwork and sports. This prepares them for life after high school.
SELF-ESTEEM- Able to bolster the 5 C’s- competence, confidence, connections, character and caring.
