South Lakes Park Trail Project
Donation protected
Hello, I'm Caleb, and I'm seeking support to fund essential equipment and supplies for our ongoing mountain bike trail project at South Lakes Park in Denton, Texas.
I've been collaborating closely with the Denton Parks and Recreation Department to enhance the city's trail network. The city has generously granted us the opportunity to create an all-volunteer mountain bike trail at South Lakes Park. I've worked in tandem with the Director of Parks and Recreation, the Director of Urban Forestry, and the Director of Environmental Sustainability to ensure responsible construction that harmonizes with the natural environment.
The project is split into two phases. Phase one can be viewed here
In April 2022, we initiated the trail-marking and clearing process, completing nearly one mile by June, just as the Texas summer heat set in. With the arrival of autumn, we're eager to resume our efforts.
Currently, we have one mile of trail completed for phase one, with an additional three planned. Phase two will include approximately 2 miles, with our ultimate goal being around five to six total miles.
A small group of dedicated volunteers has accomplished 99% of the work so far. Personally, I've contributed approximately $200 of my own funds and relied on a borrowed chainsaw from a friend, which is unsustainable for the project's duration.
All funds donated will be directly allocated to the project for the purchase of:
- Chainsaw
- Forestry saw
- Hand tools like McLeods, Mattocks, shovels, hand saws, loppers, etc.
- Fuel
- Maintenance supplies such as chains and bar oil
These tools are not luxuries; they are essential to maintain a consistent project pace. As an all-volunteer initiative, time efficiency is paramount.
The land we're working on is overrun with Chinese Privet, an invasive ornamental tree species that can reach heights of up to 30 feet and a thickness of over 2 inches. These hardy invaders are challenging to eradicate and can take over entire areas, making gas-powered cutting tools indispensable for their removal.
I am excited to give back to my city, and I hope you feel the same.
