Our Volunteer Trip to South Africa!

Gap 360 is a private independent company which aims to provide travel opportunities to travellers. Furthermore, Gap 360 is a member of the World Youth Student and Educational Travel Confederation (WYSETC) and therefore works to provide young people with the opportunity to travel in order to gain insight into other cultures and ways of life. The volunteering projects aim to provide young people with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others and work to achieve a united goal, which is specifically important to each individual country.
This summer we (Charlotte and Rachel) are engaging in a two week project based in South Africa.
The goal of this particular project is to work within the South African community to target wildlife conservation and issues of poaching. Sadly, within South Africa, poaching has reached a point of extreme crisis resulting in Rhino’s being categorised as an endangered species with approximate deaths outnumbering births. Research statistics identified by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs indicate the severity of the situation, highlighting a dramatic escalation of poaching in recent years. Staggering, these statistics inform that during 2014, 1.215 Rhinos were killed by poachers in South Africa, this equates to 1 every 8 hours.
This consequently indicate the need for projects such as this, to work alongside the local community to apprehend crisis’s such as this.
The project not only seeks to target issues of poaching but to also involves engagement with the local community through assisting in the work of the local schools. This involves encouraging the local community in providing the children with a holistic education to prepare them for the outside world where which it will be their responsibility to work in order to provide for their families. The project encourages individuals to learn about how other cultures live, to appropriately identify any areas of need and to therefore respond in accordance to this.
We are both excited to go on this incredible volunteering trip, and cannot wait to get our hands dirty in working to protect a struggling society and an endangered animal kingdom. It is our aim to achieve life changing benefits for those on the receiving end of the aid as well as to ourselves in learning to identify with a cause in need.
In order to make this mission statement possible, we will require to raise a grant total of £2500 which includes £750 each for the flights and £500 each to engage in the project itself. It is our goal to fundraise this together. We are each passionate about the work involved in the project and seek to help to local community of South Africa in whatever way we can.
Both your support and encouragement will work to make this invaluable opportunity possible.
