My name is James, but to most, I’m known as Smokey. This morning, my deli—Hale’s Kitchen, aka Smokey Jay’s—was completely destroyed in a fire. For over 25 years, our shop at Southwest Market on 5th and Elm wasn’t just a deli—it was a cornerstone of the community.
We were your morning coffee stop, your breakfast on the go, and your quick lunchtime fix. We were an iconic landmark for commuters heading downtown, a welcoming gathering place for neighbors, and just simply that reminder of the old neighborhood corner store. Hale’s Kitchen…was Southwest’s kitchen!
Losing it so suddenly is devastating. Waking up to find my life’s work and primary source of income gone has been nothing short of heartbreaking. The reality of this loss is overwhelming—bills, expenses, and the uncertainty of what comes next.
Though I would love to rebuild and start fresh, supporting my family and covering my living expenses is all that matters now. If Hale’s Kitchen has ever been part of your day, your routine, or your community, I ask for your support now. Anything helps, and every bit is deeply appreciated.
Thank you for your prayers, generosity, and for standing with us during this difficult time.
