4 years ago I was fortunate enough to be part of an organization called SpayFiji . Travelling to Fiji from all over North America this small group of 2 doctors, 1 Veterinary Technician (myself) and our founder and organizer, funded exclusively by donations, were able to help spay and neuter over 100 animals in just 4 days!
Due to the success of this clinic we have now been asked back to Fiji to help Kadavu, a small undeveloped island south of the main island of Vitu Levu. Kadavu Island is composed of eco-friendly resorts and small villages of locals. Dogs are transported here from the main island by natives with good intentions, however due to lack of understanding and funding the dogs are not fixed and the population has begun to get out of control. Unfortunately, with no veterinary care available and no other way to control the dog population, some locals use poison on these animals. Papageno Resort , a beautiful, eco-friendly resort on Kadavu Island, is working with the local villages and SpayFiji to have a medical team spay and neuter the pets on the islands.
SpayFiji is organizing a core team of Veterinarians, Animal Health Technicians (Veterinary nurses) support staff, to travel to Fiji (at our own expense) in March 2017 (originally was set for Feb 2016 but had to be postponed) and spend 2 weeks on Kadavu Island volunteering in various villages. We will be working with the local resorts and villages, walking to the villages or being transported by boat, setting up mobile clinics and surgically sterilizing all the pets in each community.
We're asking for your support in this endeavour, and assure you that any funds raised above and beyond our needs for this clinic will be carried forward to help with future SpayFiji projects. Donations will cover the cost of the medications and supplies required for this clinic, and the cost of transporting these medications. Many of the supplies we need will have to be ordered from Australia and transported to Fiji, or will be brought with us from Canada. Transportation of these supplies dramatically increases the cost of this clinic and that's where donor support comes in.
