Feeding Windsor Essex & Street Angels Soup Shack

The problem: Shelters and soup kitchens here in Windsor are done serving their last meal of the day by 630pm and our friends head for various shelters around 8-9pm. This creates a gap in food security between 7-9pm. Many of our friends go to bed hungry, especially if they can't attend the day's last meal and won't have access to food again until morning.

The solution: The Soup Shack is a 20 ft trailer that we will serve hot soup, rolls, and warm beverages out of sometime between the hours of 7-9pm.

Why does it work?

  • The volunteers that operate it are safe and warm inside the trailer, allowing them to serve all winter long
  • The food is prepared in the Feeding Windsor Essex commercial kitchen which is safety inspected
  • Service is consistent and predictable, allowing our friends to plan around us and use us as an essential tool for survival
  • Service is sustainable and low cost allowing us to do more with less

The Soup Shack will be equipped with a phone for vulnerable persons to use for emergencies or call shelters to access a safe place to sleep. Volunteers will also have literature on available services, including emergency services, local shelters, and more.

The Soup Shack will hopefully be open mid-November and will be in operation for the entire winter season, 7 days a week.

We have already purchased a trailer and are raising funds to renovate and operate the trailer for the winter months. We expect the total cost of renovations and winter operations will be about fifteen thousand dollars.

Feeding Windsor Essex has been creating food security across Windsor Essex for the past eight years, feeding hundreds of meals daily to individuals of all ages in our community through multi-level programming.

Street Angels has been operating as an outreach program for the past 2 years, serving those experiencing homelessness, poverty, and housing instability to empower them to reach their fullest potential.

We are looking for volunteers to operate The Soup Shack. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Street Angels at [phone redacted] or by email at [email redacted].
