The Spearman Family
Last year on May 14th, David Spearman suffered from a stroke. Completely unexpected, David would go on to spend the next 17 days in the hospital before being well enough to return home. Through the long hospital days and nights, Deon did not leave David's side. The battle againist remaining stroke damage has been tedious but almost a year later, David is on the mend and doing fantastic. Working hard at furthering his recovery, David attends intensive therapy several days week. As such, David has not had time to work nor is he able to right now. After being denied disability twice, Deon decided David was at a healthy enough place for her to return to a full time property management job. Conveniently located close to David's and Deon's house, this job was a great blessing and life was beginning to settle back into a routine after a harrowing and taxing year.
Sadly though, on April 5th, Deon was admitted to the hospital for a severe burn and an untreated blister on her foot. Needing immediate surgical intervention, the doctor cleaned out both wounds, but had to remove a toe from each foot. In addition, it was found that Deon's Type II Diabetes was severely out of control. While treating it orally with medication for years, Deon would need to begin insulin shots immediately.
After several days of fighting the infection, Deon had another surgery to clean out the wounds for a second time. This time, though, the doctor felt that there was too much dead tissue, so he removed all of the toes off of Deon's left foot except for her big toe. At this point, Deon and her family knew that amputation of this foot was imminent and it was scheduled last week. At that time, Deon's doctor removed her foot below the knee. As her body is free now of the large amount of infection, it is working better and she is noticing an improvement in her health. Last night, Deon had one more minor procedure to clean out the amputated toe on her right foot. Fortunately, her surgeon feels confident that Deon is done with surgeries and her right foot and left leg are healing properly. God willing, Deon will be moved to rehab in the next few days to begin the process of learning to walk again.
What can you do to help?
Obviously, with any amputation, there are going to be challenges. In the next few months, they will again be faced with some huge lifestyle changes. The Spearman's master bathroom is not handicap accessible and we would love to have this renovated for Deon before she comes home from rehab. Additionally, the expense of David's stroke combined with Deon's recent amputation is a huge financial burden. Please give anything that you can! Nothing is too little! Nothing is too small!
If you know David and Deon, you know that they are loyal, caring, and giving individuals. They are always the first to lend a hand and are available at a moments notice. Anyone who knows the Spearman family knows that they have always gone out of their way to help and bless others.
Help us bless them!
