Specialist Referral for Hunnie

Donation protected
Hello. My name is Kayleigh, and I’m fundraising for my kitten to have a referral to a specialist vet. This is her story. It’s fairly long even the shorter version, sorry.

Hunnie is 5 months old today (15th September 2023). On the 9th of September Hunnie was taken into the out of hours vets, as she was unable to stand. The vets were unsure of what was causing her symptoms, but she also had developed neurological issues such as loss of sight and confusion. When her bloods were taken, she had a high red blood cell count, which can cause the neurological symptoms. She spent the night at the emergency vet, and in the morning was transferred to our local PDSA.

PDSA rechecked her bloods, and they were at 70%. The vet said her RBC should be 30/40%. She had to have blood taken, and replaced with fluid. This procedure was repeated multiple times.

On Tuesday morning, I decided to move Hunnie to our private vet that we usually use. The PDSA had done everything they were able to do I suppose, and were pushing pts with one vet saying to me “we will only spend so much on JUST ONE PET” I wanted a second opinion, as when I saw her she was able to walk again and her sight was better. To me that was her getting better, maybe just not quick enough for them. I couldn’t just give up on her, at only coming up 5 months old.

Our private vets have been amazing. They gave her more time, and she’s been home for 2 nights now. She’s walking, eating and playing. She’s a fighter. But we still need to figure out what’s going on. Next week, her bloods will need to be rechecked. If the count is still up we will need a referral to a specialist vet in Polycythemia which is what we believe her to have. She will need extensive testing to figure out the underlying cause of the polycythemia. Just the referral consultation is £400, that’s not including any extra treatment.

We would also like to do an X-ray on her back legs to ensure there is no injury. For this our vet charges £400.

I’m attempting to fundraise this money, as I don’t believe that Hunnie is ready to give up. I believe she wants to fight, and I want to help her. I failed her by not sorting her insurance out and forgetting to sort it. I failed her as an owner and nothing I do will make that better, this is the least I can do and last thing I can think of. If you are able to, we would massively appreciate any donations towards Hunnie’s treatment. I’m putting a goal at £2000, in case any extra fees crop up for further testing. If Hunnie gets through this and there is excess on this fundraiser, it will be donated to the PDSA as a thank you for helping her in the first instance. We are so grateful for you taking the time to read this, and thank you if you are able to donate. If not I’d be super grateful if you’d be able to share and get Hunnies story out there.

I will share videos of Hunnies progress on tiktok @kayleigh16055
