Spencer is fighting for his life and his family.

Spencer is 30 years old and has a beautiful wife and three young children. He’s strong and healthy, but was born with a heart condition that required open heart valve replacement surgery.

He originally had his valve replaced at age 18, but that valve started to fail. He went in for his second surgery in April; with his youth and health, he had no reason to believe that his recovery would be anything other than the usual couple of weeks. Unfortunately, that’s not what happened.

He didn’t wake up from the anesthesia and was placed into a sedated coma. With each passing day, his wife, Amie, faced impossible choices about his future. The doctors told Amie she would have to make a decision if he didn’t wake up after taking him off sedation on day five.

Fortunately, Spencer regained consciousness, but the injury had taken its toll. He suffered damage to his brain, which affected his motor, cognitive and speech functions.

Spencer transitioned through three hospitals and countless therapists during the six weeks following his surgery. He faces months of therapy to regain basic tasks that most of us take for granted, like walking and holding his baby daughter.

Tackling his rehabilitation with his usual dedication and discipline, Spencer is resolved to get healthy and take care of his family.

But recovering from the effects of his injury is a full-time job. He’s made incredible progress but is not yet cleared to return to work. Following a few months of unemployment in 2021, Spencer supported his family with a modest job while he returned to graduate school. Determined to be self-sufficient, the young couple has depleted their savings and now need help paying their mortgage while he recovers.
