Meet the Millers- A family of public servants combating their son’s Leukemia

Steve is a 22 year veteran of the Navy whose honorable service has included: a mobilization in 2002 to serve on the Security Forces protecting Navy Region Hawaii bases following the attacks on 9/11, a combat mobilization for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008, and most recently a 3-year period of Active Duty for Special Work (2012-2015) with Joint Inter-Agency Task Force-West.

As a “civilian,” Steve serves as a Honolulu Police Officer as a Motor Sergeant.  This year will make fifteen years of service with the Honolulu Police Department.

Sheree, Steve’s wife of fourteen years works as an Emergency Medical Technician for the City and County of Honolulu.  Sheree has served as an EMT for 5 years.

Steve and Sharee have three children: Shaylee (18-attending her first year of college in Nevada), Shelbee (5-attending kindergarten) and Spencer (14-attending 8th grade).

Sadly, on December 23, 2015, Spencer was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  He was immediately admitted to Kapiolani Women’s and Children’s hospital and began chemotherapy the following day.  The treatment for this fast-growing form of cancer is as follows: six cycles of three weeks of chemotherapy followed by two weeks of rest at home (provided no infections occur).  If after the six cycles of treatment some cancer remains (which we all pray it will not), a bone marrow transplant will have to be considered.

The Millers purchased their first family home in September of 2015 and are paying college tuition as well.  No one wants to or can plan for something like this happening to a loved one.  Due to a series of somewhat unfortunate events related to Steve’s recent service with the U.S. Navy Reserves, the Millers find themselves in a very difficult place financially.

Upon Steve’s return to work as a police officer, some administrative processes were overlooked which led to his medical insurance not getting activated as expected.  In an attempt to compensate, Steve reactivated his Tricare insurance and will have to make retroactive payments from November to get it up to date.  Further complicating things is the fact that during Steve’s work with the Navy Reserves, he was not accruing leave with his civilian job.  In addition to that, Sheree was taking large amounts of leave to compensate for Steve’s numerous deployments on missions to South and Southeast Asia.  On top of this financial burden is now placed the psychological burden of the thought of Steve and Sheree not being able to be by the side of their son Spencer as he endures this excruciating but necessary treatment.

The Millers are a very humble and proud family.  It is not in their nature to ask for help.  Please help me give them the help they need and deserve.  Any contribution would be greatly appreciated.
