Postpartum Depression Documentary

THE PUSH FOR PERMISSION is a documentary about one woman’s humorous, raw, and real journey in to motherhood. Stand-up comedian Angelina Spicer has always brought the funny but it wasn’t until she was committed to a psychiatric hospital for postpartum depression that she realized her own story would be the ultimate punchline.
MEET ANGELINA
This ain't the Instagram version of being a mama - this is the truth, the painful, and the funny! In this piece we
follow the story of Angelina Spicer, a young, ambitious, up and coming stand up comedian who suddenly felt
trapped and overwhelmed by the demands of her vagina bustin' newborn. The documentary unfolds as we see
Angelina develop her first one hour comedy special about struggling to fall in love with her baby, being admitted
to a psychiatric facility, and using her comedy to shed the stigma.
Angelina is focused on leading a Postpartum Revolution. Motherhood, the Psych ward, and a broken vagina has blessed Angelina with a goldmine of material and with your help, she's ready to take a stab at her first one hour comedy special! The fiercely funny comedy set will serve as the backbone to the documentary while interviews, animation, and comedy sketches will round out her groundbreaking take on mental illness. This revolution started with Angelina's personal struggles, but the movement is bigger than her. PPD is real, but so is our ability rally together to release mom's of their shame.
Approximately 1 in 5 women experience significant depression following childbirth. The percentages are even higher for women who are also dealing with poverty, and can be twice as high for teen parents. Ten percent of women experience depression in pregnancy. In fact, perinatal depression is the most common complication of childbirth.
Joining this initiative means you become a critical part of producing Angelina's one hour comedy special. Moms need us. They need us to remind them of their power to overcome and together we can help them find a new strength!

Angelina Spicer is a comedian, actress, social media influencer, wife and mother. A cum-laude graduate of
Howard University, Spicer has smartly delved deep for comedy that’s authentic, transparent, and relatable. By
using her social media platform, she became an outspoken advocate for maternal mental health after she was
admitted into a psychiatric facility for treatment of postpartum depression (PPD). It was then that her journey to
remove the stigma from the shame and guilt associated with PPD began. She became the 2018 Spokeswoman
for The Blue Dot Project, has lobbied on Capitol Hill, helped pass three new pieces of legislation for new moms
in California and been featured on NPR, in USA Today & Essence magazine.
